Question:
I am a Northwest homebrewer living in Vancouver, WA. There is a certain Microbrewery here that makes my favorite ale. The brewery is called McMennamin’s and the ale is called Hammerhead. Does anyone in the Portland, OR area have a recipe for this fine ale? I would greatly appreciate any ideas, advice, or guidance towards formulating a recipe that is similar or coming up with one of my own. Thanks in advance and respond either here or e-mail me at

This isn’t that hard. Go to the brewery on a tour and ask the brewer how he makes the beer. You can learn enough with a few meaningful questions (decoction or single step?, what kinds of hops? etc.) to get a good starting point. I once went on a brewery tour where the master brewer up and gave me the recipe. It wasn’t exact (how could it be, I brew 15 gallons, max.). But it was close enough for people to say "real similar." —
