Urban Brewing Legend

Categories: Homebrew Beer

Question:

: I’m just getting back into brewing after a break of a few years.  Anyway, : yesterday someone who doesn’t brew told me that someone she knows who does : brew adds a bottle of commercial nonalcoholic beer to the second stage : because "it settles the sediment or something".  I’ve never heard of such : a thing, and I am willing to put this under the catagory of Urban Legend, : but I figured I’d go ahead and put it to you folks.  What benefits (if : any) could someone expect to gain from adding a nonalcoholic beer to your : second stage?  Thanks. None —         "Good idea, Chuck.  But, syrup won’t stop them!" – Firesign Theatre

Only benefit I can think of would be the carbonation in the NA beer would all fizz out when you poured it into the secondary, making a blanket of CO2 over the top to protect the brew from the air.  There would be no reason to use NA beer over another beer (even another homebrew) that I can think of.
