SRM Reference Chart?

Categories: Homebrew Beer

Question:

I just came across a post by the very Dennis Davison who makes the color card.  The email address is Cheers, Dave in Sydney — David S. Draper, School of Earth Sciences, Macquarie University, NSW 2109              ….I’m not from here, I just live here….

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yup.  The card you mention is manufactured by Dennis Davison, multi-award-winning homebrewer.  I have one and it is extremely useful, and well worth the $10 or so that Dennis charges for it.  The card has 9 windows at srm = 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, 11, 14, 17, and 19.  Shortly after I bought mine, Dennis told me that he had the cards measured by spectrophotometer at the Siebel institute and they were all bang on to within a couple percent relative–for homebrewer’s purposes, that’s as close to exact as one could ever want. I don’t have Dennis’s email address handy, but you can find it if you scan an index file for the HBD, available at ftp.stanford.edu in pub/clubs/homebrew/beer/digests/[year]–I know for sure you can find him in 1994 or 1995.  His snail mail address is: Dennis Davison 4025 S. 65th #14 Greenfield, Wisconsin 53220 USA

I’m just wondering what size and shape of container you’re supposed to use to compare SRM using this card.  Thanks to anyone who knows! Jeffrey M. I used the SRM reference card on our beers and tested against George Fix’s method to determine the color of our beers. Fix’s method involves using Michelob Classic Dark as a reference (SRM 17), and diluting a known sample for comparison with the beer that you are trying to determine the color. The card works great and is much easier to use. The instructions even give suggestions for different types of lighting situations. I highly recommend it! Dennis says the Homebrew Color Guide was calibrated using a clear 10 oz plastic Solo cup (AHA competition glass) with one (1) inch of beer in it.  [ S.P.S. Beer Stuff, Homebrew Supplies by Mail (319) 393-1219 ]  [ on-line catalog--  http://www.netins.net/showcase/spsbeer/ ]

: I am looking for an SRM reference that can be used by judges in : competitions. I’ve seen one – a pocket sized card with colored windows : that you can hold next to your beer to calibrate the color. Most of the larger, more established homebrew suppliers have ‘em. Cards I’ve seen are from Davison Mfg., 4025 S. 65th #14, Greenfield WI 53220 (414)545-9246. Probably no mail order for individuals though.
