Potato beer?
Question:
I saw an advertisement for a homebrew contest featuring potato beer in today’s Homebrew Digest. This got me thinking. How would you go about mashing potatoes? (‘mash’, as in the process of making beer, not ‘mashed’, as in a bowl with milk and butter, or gravy.
But seriously, has anybody done this? How are they used? What do they add to the beer in terms of flavor and fermentables? What styles of beer are they appropriate in? Does anyone know of any breweries making potato beer? I’d like to know more. Replies welcome, stupid jokes ignored. Thanks. — The address in the header is a forgery. I have not personally tried brewed with potatoes, though the idea *has* crossed my mind. I believe there is an article on brewing with potatoes on "The Brewery" Web site (www.brewery.org) somewhere. —

Just boil ‘em, mash ‘em (that’s a potato mash this time) in the water (don’t drain), and add to the mash (beer mash). So you basically use them like corn or rice. What do they add to the beer in terms of flavor and fermentables?
They are exceptionally neutral. So they add nothing (but fermentables) What styles of beer are they appropriate in? Does anyone know of any breweries making potato beer? I’d like to know more.
Anything you’d put rice into. So for me, that’s just about anything. I don’t recall their percentage of water. That’s the only special thing you have to take into account. I think it’s 30%. cheers, -Alan — "Brewers make wort, yeast makes beer" – Dave Miller’s Homebrewing Guide http://www.magma.ca/~bodnsatz/brew/tips/

Thank You! I found it. I searched the real beer page (www.realbeer.com) and didn’t come up with anything. They usually have everything. — The address in the header is a forgery.
