homey brew.
Question:
Hiya! As far as I know, you needn’t be of legal drinking age. I’ve been homebrewing since I was about 16 and never had any problems. Of course, I’ve been of legal drinking age for ages now, It could be that the rules have changed. Cheers! Matthew.
Response:
Do I have to be the LEGAL drinking age to buy home brew stuff? Recently I went to my local home brew shop to buy some hopped malt extract but the guy needed to see ID im only 18 and need to be 19 (CANADA). I thought that i was not alloweed to buy alc. but the kit has no alc in it untill i make it. I can go buy grapes and yeast from grochery store to make wine, and they will not make me show ID. Andrew, From what I have seen, almost all homebrew stores will not sell supplies to someone who is obviousl a minor (one exception in Indiana). However, you are correct, it would be perfectly legal to do so, as the homebrew ingredients do not themselves contain alchohol. The most reasonable explanation I have heard for this dichotomy is that for most cases, people brew alchoholic beer (yes, i realize people brew NA’s exclusively, but EXTREMELY RARELY). Therefore, the purpose to which the equipment would be put would be something illegal (minor brewing alchoholic bevrage). It is entirely possible that the supplier of the equipment could then be held liable for several things, the most important of which would be contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The homebrew shop does not gain enough profit to offset the risk of such an event occuring. Therefore, I believe that you will continue to see this practice.
