Question:

AGL only rents out their own tanks.  They won’t refill your own tank. I’ve tried.

That’s news to me.  The first time I went in, I had a brand-spanking-new 5 lb cylinder.  The guy took mine, and came back with a full one.  It’s got "Property of AGL" on it, but a razor can easily take care of that.  Whenever I go in, I just swap the empty for a full.

Correct.  They swap out and fill their own tanks.  In your case they simply made your new tank theirs.  In my case I had a brand new aluminum tank that I was not willing to swap out for one of their old steel tanks.

Check the Yellow Pages for welding equipment and supplies.  I use AGL in Clifton (if that is local to you).

When I lived in Hoboken, the name of the place was C O 2. That was years ago, though.  Don’t know if it is still there. If you are in northern NJ you may want to check out our homebrew club, Jersey Association of HomeBrewers at http://www.jerseybrewers.com/.  Some of the members keg their beer and may be of more help than I have been.
