Clay, Thanks for pointing this out, you’re totally right. Sorry I didn’t say it more clearly.  We are offering a trial subscription…that means if you e-mail me your name and address, I’ll sign you up and you’ll get our premier issue. If you don’t like it, there is NO CHARGE. When you get the bill, do as Clay says – write "cancel" on it and send it back. That’ll be the end of it. If you like it, you’ll be set to get it every month at home. A note to all of those who have been asking where to buy BYO locally…I’m trying to answer all of you, but it takes some time. Many of them are carrying Brew Your Own. If yours does not, tell ‘em to contact me, I’ll hook them up with however many they want. I got the same direct mail piece from "Brew Your Own" — and also decided to send it in. I don’t think anyone’s received a copy yet, as it appeared to be a start-up (look closely at the mock-up, it has Latin filler copy from Pagemaker).

I got the first issue about a week ago.  I subscribed several months ago, before they had to change their name from "Brew" to "Brew Your Own". It looks nice and has some good information.  Probably not as useful as this newsgroup, but easier to loan to a friend or leave lying on the coffee table. — Lee Boyle

Don…and anyone else who is interested – We ARE offering free issues in the form of a trial subscription. All you have to do is e-mail me your name and address, and we will send out the premier issue. If you don’t like it, just let us know when the bill comes (you can just put "cancel" on it) and there is NO CHARGE. No joke. If you do like it…pay the bill instead. Then you’ll get BYO at your house every month. Ask and you shall receive…we hope you enjoy the magazine, and would like to hear what you think! Susan Walton

Has anyone gotten a card in the mail for a free issue of "Brew Your Own", a new monthly homebrewing magazine?  I got mine and decided to send it in, see if this new publication will be any good.  Has anyone out there actually gotten the magazine?

I got a card in the mail and decided instead to tell our local Bookstar book store about it when it hits publications.   These guys are great, you suggest a magazine, they subscribe AND call you at home when it comes in every month!  I talked them into getting Brewing Tech. and it sells out every month in about 2-3 days time. jw

Got my first trial issue in the mail yesterday.  It looks pretty good, although I haven’t read it yet. Articles are: Prohibition Pilsner (with Al Capone’s recipe (all grain))               Homebrew Away from Home (Brew on Premises)               Pluge into Liquid Yeast               Better Beer with Kits               Your Own Draft System               Solve the Mystery of Decoction Mashing               BYO Interview: Charlie Papazian               Brewing Basics for Beginners along with different departments and columns. Will be interesting to compare it with Brewing Techniques, my plan is to subscribe to one of them. Jim

I agree with the "If you want people to check out your premier issue, why don’t you send out sample copies like Brewing Techniques did? I called the 800 number to

locate a copy only to be given another number which has always been busy. I wonder if any magazine that I have’nt even seen yet is worth this much trouble? Why not a 800 number that will send out sample copies?

I enjoy it Right Now I perfer to just pick it up off the shelf that way i can leaf through it and see if anything catches my eye Love the recipes

Response:

BYO is OK. It seems particularly focused on the beginner or slightly experience brewer. It features a lot of extract recipes every month and used to have a "style of the month" article which gave a little history and several recipes for that style. If you are a more advance brewer try Brewing Techniques (actually online at www.brewingtechniques.com as is BYO www.byo.com ). Yes, I subscribe. A lot of people seem to poo-poo it, they have the opinion that it is aimed at begginers.  While this is partly true you should consider that this is by far the most entertaining magazine.  There are also a number of articles aimed squarely at intermediate to advanced brewers.  I am on my second subscription and by no stretch of the imagination could I be called a newbie brewer. I think its great! For the amount of help I get out of it vs. Zymurgy, vs. cost, I take BYO over Zymurgy if I had to choose only one!! Some don’t like it, and don’t like the idea that  you will get an invoice a month, or so, after getting your free issue, and they have to physically cancel the freebie yourself, but that’s just a small effort IMHO. they’re not sending a free issue out just for the heck of it. No offense Robert, but they pulled the same sly crap on me and it pissed me off. I will NEVER subscribe to that mag for this very reason. I wasn’t very impressed with the two issues I saw either. Too basic for me, but for folks just getting started it might not be a bad way to go. I get Zymurgy right now and am not terribly impressed with it either. I’m planning on letting the subscription lapse on that and picking up Brewing Techniques. JG — Life’s too short to sleep

They’re switching to bi-monthly soon. One wonders where they’ll come up with twice as many articles. Steve

No offense taken John. Like I said earlier, some people don’t like that method of circulation, and some don’t mind. As for Brewing Techniques. I have to agree its one of the BEST mags out there. The main reason I don’t subscribe is the price! I can see it now: Why We Brew and Bottle Openers _every other month_! Joy! Rapture! To the original poster: I subscribed for a year to BYO. Pros: Lighthearted attitude, geared toward less experienced (or less technical) brewers. Cons: after a year, I felt I wasn’t learning anything new so I moved to Brewing Techniques, also they seem to have major problems with proofreading some recipes (5 oz hops instead of .5 oz, etc.). All told, it’s an enjoyable, not-too-technical brewing mag. Relative newcomers will enjoy it. After a little experience, you’ll probably find yourself wanting more. Just my 1/50 of $1, Matt

Hell, they could just bottle up some of our rcb and hbd prattle and publish that. It’d certainly be more interesting than some of the goo they run. JG — Life’s too short to sleep
