Anyone ever hop a barleywine with Sazz??

Categories: Homebrew Beer

Question:

I know Sazz is most always used in Lagers, but I *really* like Sazz, & was wondering if anyone had ever used it in a barleywine with good results.  If so, please post the recipe.

I DRYHOPPED a barleywine with Saaz once. It was a communal barleywine (large batch initially produced by a local brewpub, and the gave away some of the wort because it was too much for the current fermentation tanks) and many people in our brewclub ‘finished’ it differently. I used quite a bit (don’t remember) and have to say that it did give a noticeable effect, but it wasn’t earthshattering or anything. Barleywine is HUGE, and Saaz is delicate. I would personally use something with a little more of a kick to it. jg

You might be better off using a high alpha hop for the boil, and save the saaz for dry hopping. 1-2 oz. should be enough to get a good saaz hop aroma. I dry hopped with 1 oz. of saaz in my BW last year and I think it could use more. Mark Hafterson Don’t let your beer be a stranger.  HOMEBREW! http://www.jcave.com/~dejabru/
