Pedal Layouts and best effects (stompboxes only)

Categories: Home Brew

Question:

I’m curious about the best order of effect pedals in a chain and the best best effects to put in the chain. What’s your effect chain look like and what do you have/want in it? Cheers, L

Response:

My chain goes like this: Guitar | JH1 Cry Baby | Ibanez CF7 Chorus/Flanger | Boss BD-2 Blues Driver | homebrew Tube Screamer | homebrew MXR Distortion+ | Morley Little Alligator volume pedal | Amp (either my Mesa Boogie Nomad 55 or my POD XT into whatever crap they have in the rehearsal studio) What do I want? I want to add a delay effect that can handle the very short delays like the opening chords from No Matter What (Bad Finger). You know, that bathroom tile sound. I also might build a homebrew Fuzz Face. I built one and gave it to my son, and it came out so well I might build myself one too.

Response:

Personally, I don’t chain pedals (at the moment).   I use one at a time.   But check out this website http://guitargeek.com/  They have a lot of setups by famous guitar players.  I haven’t looked close enough to find out how they collect their info though, but it’s an interesting website. Guitar— modded TS-10— Amdek stereo chorus— Marshall DSL100 and/or Marshall JMP100 (2203), and I have a Line 6 delay modeler in the effects loop of the DSL.  Instead of the Amdek chorus, I was thinking of putting in a Line 6 modulation modeler.  Believe it or not, that no-name Amdek sounds better than a lot of other choruses I’ve heard.  I bought it in Japan in the mid-80’s for about $35, and haven’t heard many that sounds as good as that one.  I was also thinking about adding or checking out a Whammy pedal. –Tony Lostpup198

Ernie Ball Volume – Dunlop Wah – vintage MXR Microamp – Boss DD3 Delay – MXR Phase 90 Would like to have a Line 6 Delay moldeller to have a few sounds to choose from on the fly. Chris star.star www.starstar.ca

http://www.geocities.com/jjsant/Dscf0018.jpg The wah is a Coloursound WahFuzz but I took out the useless fuzz and added the LED. Since the Compression/Sustainer boosts all noise before it (when using the sustainer feature) I put it first. Since the distortion pedals also compress, I put the EQ after them since I use it to boost the overall level as well as scoop the mids a little.   JJman

Guitar boss eq boss line selector (for level boost) AB box A output to Boss reverb into vibrato channel of

64 Tremolux. B output to Home brew direct bypass AB Loop box with modded TS9 in A loop and Pro Co Rat in B loop Ibanez Delay into normal channel of Tremolux. This gives me clean with reverb and Level boost into one channel. (selected with the first AB Box) I leave the TS9, Rat and delay always on. So with the B output selected (on the first AB box)  i can then switch between the TS9 and Rat with one button on the AB Loop box. The line selector gives level boost for clean or dirty solo’s. Using both channels of the Tremolux allows me to set tone controls separately for clean and dirty as well as their respective volumes. I dont know if this is "the best" for everyone, but as i have to play a lot of different styles of music, it gives me some choices without surrendering to digital multi fx crap. Warren
