The rules seem to assume that all cartridges are the same. Some printers (some Canon machines, for instance) have a separate printhead as part of the machine, rather than installed in the cartridge. These cartridges are relatively trouble-free. I have made it a point to buy only Canon printers (like the S300 or i475D) that use dirt cheap cartridges that I buy in bulk on eBay. They work great, especially the ones I bought from seller abacus24-7.

Some of the pallet sellers will sell you empty, used carts as new. Beware. — GW

<some snippage We also counsel people here not to buy laptops on eBay. I think I’m about to sell another one (impaired).

In my time in eBay, I’ve bought advertised NIB ink cartridges, and have never been taken. Not expired, worked fine to EOL. And I’ve sold a few used, but fully-functional laptops on eBay, getting more than I thought I would, and never had a compaint from a buyer. Our experiences with eBay, PayPal, buyers and sellers will vary; our experiences with SB will not; he’s like a consistent hemorrhoid; get it quieted down, and it always come back and chaps your ass. — Regards, Jim – from Texas, USA (Texas Motto: "One Riot, One Ranger") All Posts Sent Have Been Scanned !

CAUTION: The living being once known as "Don Lancaster" has been deceased for some number of years. As many have found out, Don’s posts have been generated by an increasingly malfunctioning TRS-80 Eliza computer program, although its results are certainly more credible than those from the odd little creature that calls itself "SB". No need to send replies to "Don", as they cannot be read from beyond the grave. No need to send replies to SB as they will not be comprehended. — Regards, Jim – from Texas, USA (Texas Motto: "One Riot, One Ranger") All Posts Sent Have Been Scanned !

Yep. Caveat Emptor. Some brands of carts are encoded with an electronic expiry date, and the printers will refuse to even attempt to print with them beyond a certain time after that date. You need to make sure your printer isn’t one of these, and or the carts are still in the will-print window. No. my printer is an old dumb as a brick job. You can even refill them and it’ll keep on truckin’.

I always buy my cartridges off an eBay seller, and I’ve never had a problem. They’re not refilled, not OEM, not expired. I think I must have been lucky to just happen to have selected a legitimate seller. A

Right but you’re also working on the premise that I was sitting next to a calendar looking at the particular days. Absolutely you are right though I did wait way too long before I started complaining. I suppose the fact that I had purchased many things in the past via e-bay and never had a problem, I was a little lackadaisical. I just assumed shipping was slow with customs, etc. I have contacted them several times, they told me once via email that it had been shipped, 2 weeks later it hadn’t been shipped because they didn’t receive the pay. I sent them the PayPal receipt and then they told me they would take care of it ASAP. Never did, I emailed them 2 weeks ago, they said they are waiting for USPS forms for file a lost parcel? I don’t know

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all; I purchased 2 Ink Cartridges from a company called "EliteInkJets" owned by a man named Nadim Mourad. I purchased these items on the 15th of November. It is now the 7th of February and I still haven’t received the ink. I’ve been trying to email him several times to figure out when the ink was coming and still nothing.. I complained to PayPal and they told me that because I waited to long it’s passed the 30 days I can file in (even though it was 2-4 weeks delivery) 4 weeks delivery = 28 days. You could have waited him out and *still* had time to file your PayPal claim. Just wanted to let you know that Ebay and Paypal doesn’t "cover" you like they claim they do. And Eliteinkjets.com should not be trusted. Thanks, Jon We’re sorry you didn’t read the instructions. But….you CAN file a credit card chargeback (if you paid via credit card). Kris

Yeah good call, I bought another set of Cartridges (I know I’m a sucker for punishment) from another person "tonerday" and they emailed me as soon as it was one, and they sent me an email telling me it has been shipped and to let them know if any problems? So far so good I say We’ll see..

By the same token, you bear the responsibility of following up on your purchases when they take more than a week to deliver. I’ve purchased stuff that came from HONG KONG … which took only 12 days from the sale close until the item arrived at my door in Los Angeles. Paypal does say that after 30 days, the deal is done. — ~Philip.

Although the OP in the original thread is intent on warning about a particular seller (whose listings contain numerous red, orange and yellow flags for experienced bidders), there’s more general issue of buying inkjet cartridges on eBay. Three rules about that: 1. Don’t buy inkjet cartridges on eBay. 2. If you are tempted to ignore rule 1, see rule 1. 3. I found expired unopened NIB OEM carts on eBay and the prices were tiny.
Actually, a substantial number of them are entirely non-existent. The buyer’s money, however, is real. However, in the case of real (working) laptops, the buyer’s money is often not real. If you do find unexpired, unopened NIB OEM carts, the prices (including S&H) are apt to be no more attractive than your favorite .com. Very few refills are so identified in the auction Title. Titles usually just reflect the OEM SKU. Yes, this violates eBay policies (misleading titles, keyword spam, perhaps others). No, as usual, eBay seems to have no inclination to enforce obvious blatent, easy to find violations of policies. More than a few such auctions don’t even admit that the carts are refills (or "remanufactured"), or they bury that key fact in a blizzard of verbiage they figure you won’t read. If the carts are actually OEM, there’s a high probability that they are either/both: – expired – open box (probably "wrong cart for my printer" returns). If the seller "neglects" to tell you the expiration date on the carton, odds are the cart is expired. Expired carts may be a reasonable deal, depending on how long expired, brand and model. But if the seller won’t tell you the date up front, that’s a warning about that seller. So ask them. The answer may be telling. I have sold unused/outdated carts on eBay, clearly identified as such and heavily caveated. Seller and buyer were happy, but this is the exception, and not the rule. Open box carts are a different can of worms. If it’s a multi-color integrated cart (e.g. hp), and the tape over the CMY nozzles was removed and re-applied, there’s a serious chance of cross-tank color contamination, as well as dried ink clogs. If you can’t determine from auc whether the carton is still "factory sealed", ask. Sellers who push junk carts are highly likely to exhibit other symtoms of being ProblemSellers: slow/no ship, FB hostaging, not responsible for item in shipment, non-responsive to emails, no phone number, no on-site pick-up, drop-shipping seller, etc. Most of the cart pusher listings I’ve reviewed are from sellers from whom I would buy no products of any kind, just based on their presentation & terms. Meanwhile, back at refills … Whether or not to use refilled carts is an on-going debate. Personally, I never have (so keep that in mind). The risks of refills seem to include: – nozzle life was exhausted before this last refill – leaking and consuming the useful life of the ink wick (if any) in your printer, or even more serious damage – unsatisfactory printing results: ugly font rendering, missing lines, inaccurate color matching, fast fading, etc. – short cartridge life, wiping out the original economic incentive to not go OEM Refills also come from various sources, including: – seller refills using home-brew ink – seller refills using aftermarket ink – 3rd-party name-brand aftermarket refills Your risks vary considerably with each. Unless you already have experience with specific refills, and know how to find unexpired identical product, don’t get your feet wet via eBay. The ink is hard to wash out. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

Yes they do. For instance, PayPal covers you if you file a complaint within 30 days, JUST LIKE THEY SAY THEY DO. You waited too long to complain. It’s not PPs fault that you willingly bought an item with a delivery time of "2-4 weeks" and then waited until past the 30 day deadline before you filed a complaint. You let the protections they promise expire, and that’s not their fault it’s YOUR fault. Next time, either avoid auctions with a 2-4 week delivery time or file a complaint before the 30 days runs out. You can remove the complaint if your item arrives after you file. jc

I purchased 2 Ink Cartridges from a company called "EliteInkJets" owned by a man named Nadim Mourad. I purchased these items on the 15th of November. It is now the 7th of February and I still haven’t received the ink.

Did you look at their feedback before bidding? <http://www.toolhaus.org/cgi-bin/negs?User=nadim224&Dirn=Received+by There are a lot of complaints about slow shipping. They also have an 800 number in their auction, have you called and asked when your order was shipped? If you call, it may result in getting your item, while posting here is certainly not going to result in getting your item. jc

I purchased 2 Ink Cartridges from a company called "EliteInkJets" …

Searching … "388 items found for EliteInkJets in Computers & Networking" They are obviously too busy selling to be bothered with fulfillment I purchased these items on the 15th of November.

And you waited until all your options expired just why? Just wanted to let you know that Ebay and Paypal doesn’t "cover" you like they claim they do.

Had you paid via credit-card funded PP, you could at least have done a chargeback. And had to come to a.m.o.e. before bidding, we could have pointed out some things like (taking a random EIJ auction): Title: "(3) HP #78 TriColor C6578 HP 78 Inkjet Cartridges"

Fraudulent. These are refills, as the description later notes. "Item location: Ebay"

Big red flag "Positive Feedback: 98.8%"

Needs to be higher. And did you look at the FB? The many negs (3 removed) are mostly for slow/no shipping. "After you won the auction"

no comment "you may also send payment direct to our Pay Pal email account at elitetradingcorporation -at – hotmail.com"

4 weeks delivery = 28 days. You could have waited him out and *still* had time to file your PayPal claim.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Whilst wandering in Usenet, PMG exclaimed… So you think that mentioning Telecasters and whining about people that bitch about S/N ratios in newsgroups helps? It hasn’t helped any in the past. I usually killfile people for bitching about the S/N ratio. The only reason I didn’t this time was because it was somebody who’s repeatedly misspelled his own name. Yep, that Miels guy needs help with his spelling… Now, if you had mentioned that you were waiting for Mercury Magnetics iron for a Super Reverb-ish home brew project, you might a been able to avoid an AGA time out! How are they on delivery time? I don’t know, I ordered the iron through LV (he said he’d throw in one of his coveted atomic mind control devices). Oh, great! Now he’s distributing his mind control devices. Of course you realize that if you focus enough of those devices at one person, he’ll become several different people, but they’ll *all* call you a Mo while obsessing about your butt. That’s the only possible explanation for the proliferation of dirty socks exhibited by some of the, uhhh, less-stable posters. These nefarious devices should be immediately banned, or at the least registered by the government and be subjected to a transfer tax. Claude That would be the Democrat way, but Judge Mentok "the Mind-taker" won’t allow that to happen. The Second Amendment says nothing that could be construed to allow civilian possession of semi-automatic subatomic mind control devices. Perhaps these horrific machines are allowable for an organized and regulated militia, but I doubt it. Claude Actually, and it’s not something I’ve researched, but mind control (other than propaganda, and Shock and Awe) has been used to freak out the enemy in times of war. I know there’re some here with insight into that, but I doubt that they’ll discuss it. Black Helicopters are everywhere! Some say that the central control for the Black Helicopters is located in the Black Pyramid, but I don’t think so. The diabolical semi-automatic subatomic mind control beams are exacting a terrible toll from the good citizens of our once proud Nation. Examples abound, even here in AGA. BTW. I vote for restoration. Say no to Hack-Butchery. Claude You’re only saying those things because semi-automatic subatomic mind control beams are *making* you say them. It’s not easy to detect. I’ve minimized the effects by always wearing the appropriate beanie, shiny side out. I also utilize the extra long grounding screw. Actually, the beams are only dangerous when they are crossed and focussed on the unprotected. So I’m told. Claude

As long as that ground screw is seated into the "Ignorium Lobe", you should be ok. Pete — –Plank

I mostly use some NOS sockets from Europe, they are just made of phenolic plastic or something, but the important thing to me is the tightness of the contacts. These are tight as hell! Unfortunately they will soon be used up, and I am going to try some ceramic and some plastic that I just bought. One thing to check is the mounting hole size, some of the ceramics I bought require a bigger hole and that’s a bummer. I prefer the 3/4 hole size, the 7/8 don’t leave enough metal for the mounting screws… plus if you are replacing a socket it means re-punching the chassis… (I don’t have a 7/8 punch)

Hi Phil. For aluminum, I’ve used a drill designed for drilling holes in wooden doors. Wear glasses and grit your teeth. Spin the drill in reverse to score the line a bit first and go slow near the end. Copper is softer than aluminum. Sure will look pretty with glowing tubes. Idea. I put a sheet of clear acrylic over the faceplate on one amp, that protects the stick-on lettering. It extends down like a window so you can see the tubes from the front. Be nice to display that copper chassis somehow. I like tubesandmore. They send me postcards. Living in that northern territory, Canada, I pay federal tax, provincial tax, currency exchange, AND a $5.00 customs charge on an order from the US, unopened. Butt… if it’s 10 caps in an envelope from AE, yippee, no tax, no nothing. Go figure. Porky

For 9-pin tube socket holes, go to Sears, or any hardware store and buy a "uni-bit". Its a stepped drill bit, they can go as high 1 1/4". However, the ones you’ll find at Sears and hardware stores usually don’t go over 7/8".

The smaller (1/2" conduit) setup *might* be cheaper than the 7/8" step-drill (unibit), but it’s been a while since I bought either. I’ve had the 7/8 bit a very long time. I’ve had the knockout forever. It makes a much cleaner hole. If you do get one, get the Greenlee Slugbuster. The 1 1/8" (3/4 conduit) unibit cost me almost $50 about 5 years ago. electrical supply house. You should be able to buy just the 1/2" die, cutter and drawbolt. Even if it’s a bit more costly than a unibit, IMO it’s worth it. -Dave

Well, at Doug’s suggestion, I checked it out. They cost in the low $30’s depending on where and exactly what. I’m trying to do this on the cheap.
Sometimes in a tight spot I’ll have to break out the hand punch, but usually it’s the 707 hydrualic set. The 7/8" step-drill for the drawbolt hole for the bigger holes (up to 4"). The Slugbuster cutter is a lot easier to wrench, too. -Dave

Hmmm. No 7/8" or 1 1/8". No bearing on the drawbolt will make for some hard wrenching as will the cutters. Slugbusters are great (Greenlee), but more costly. -Dave

I have a small unibit at work but it seems that every hole I make is too big! The step sizes are too much I guess… I guess I’ll look around more for a decent one with fine steps… I have a drill set that is very fine… but it takes work to get a round hole!

You can engineer up a simple single or double conversion AM receiver with 2N2222A transistors and a couple of opamps for the audio section. A simple diode detector will do.
shared these priceless pearls of wisdom: – I am an electronics engineer and I though a good project would be to build – an aircraft tranceiver. – -You may not operate such a tranciever (even to test it) unless you and the -equipment are licensed. That is not true. You can’t get the license until you do the TA & C tests, and you can’t do the tests until you get the license? No, the FCC does not make us do the chase-your-tail routine so common with the FAA. BTW for both of you, it is "transceiver". You won’t get the equipment licensed without paying -mucho money. The rules allow a little latitude, much more than you realize. Mucho is in the eye of the muchee. Amateur ("ham") radio operator can build and operate their own -equipment but only on the ham bands. That isn’t true either. That would be something to look into. Go -to http://www.arrl.com for information on how to get involved in ham radio and -get licensed. You are telling an electronic engineer about ARRL? That’s a kick. Jim Jim Weir (A&P/IA, CFI, & other good alphabet soup) VP Eng RST Pres.
I don’t think it would hurt anybody if you kept your project in a faraday cage into a resistive load. As another person mentioned, don’t use a home brew transceiver in the aircraft band. If you have a lawful reason to be transmitting there, buy a 300 dollar hand held transceiver. A good place for that is in the amateur radio band. They will welcome you there. Not enough home brewer’s in the hobby any more. If you want to do something AM in the VHF range have a look at the band plan for the 144 – 148 Mhz or Ham 2 meter band. You will get simular propagation charaisticts. Oh and you will be allowed to run higher output radios there as well if you want. I am an electronics engineer and I though a good project would be to build an aircraft tranceiver. Has anyone got any good schematics or ideas ? Thanks s

– "How can there possibly be liberty and justice for all, when, in the name of justice, people claim rights to income, food, housing, education, health care, transportation, ad infinitum? We can’t. Positive rights to receive such things, absent an obligation to earn them, must violate others’ liberty, by taking some of their income without their consent. They are really just wishes, convertible into benefits for some only by employing the government to violate others’ rights not to have what is theirs taken." –Pepperdine Professor Gary Galles

Since you want to build a transmitter on the aviation band, you have to meet some pretty tight bandwidth requirements. The last thing the aviation community needs is a unlicensed, possibly "dirty" transmitter on the aviation band.

If I had to make one I would take a low cab dark chocolate candy bar and give melting it a try if it comes out smooth you won’t have any problems. I would make it with no crust and for the ingredients I would use eggs, at least 3 pkgs of REAL cream cheese at room temp, heavy cream and vanilla sweetened with splenda. I cook by feel and senses, without weights and measures. I’m guessing you would need 6 jumbo eggs at least 1/2 C (maybe more) heavy cream and vanilla to taste. The amount of splenda depends on how sweet you want it anywhere from 3/4 C to 1 C should work. Bake at 350 deg F in middle of oven until done. Garnish with some hazelnuts. Oh, check your local home-brew supply store. They may have a natural chocolate flavor additive. Some people like making homebrew beers and wines that have a chocolate finish. I do not know what the carb count would be in the additive.
  – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i was catching a REX flight to Dubbo over the weekend.. I went through the metal detectors and then i got pulled up by a staff member telling me he wanted to test me for explosives.. He said it was a random test and is compulsery. My friend did SYD-PER-SYD a few weeks back, and got "randomly" pulled aside BOTH ways. They didnt find anything of interest. I dont know how they select their subjects, but my friend is white in his early 20’s and was wearing a business suit. Matt. I’m always getting pulled over for checking at airports, usually the full bag inspection at customs, but more recently this explosive residue check (always at BNE). I don’t particularly mind, but is there some sort of selection criteria for who they choose to screen or is it truly random? I had the same experience going International about a month ago, they picked people ‘randomly’ after going through security. I noticed that they picked people who were most likely to speak/read english as the security guy had to explain what was about to happen and the victim had to read a sheet (tho it was mulitlingual). They let a lot of non-anglo’s go by and I suspected it was because of the need to explain what the test was about. My mistake was to make eye contact with the bloke after the security check. yeah, its a complete joke. the likely hood of an australian bloody strapping TNT to himself is very low, compared to the arabs/towl heads.. I think its just stupid pulling me up and letting the arab in front of me through. But the Arab Moslem has and will make big noises about being victimized and so forth look at that lying evil turd Hilaly (mufti at Lakemba Mosque) scream when they deservedly screened him?
I wonder how I’ll fare after a session of reloading?

lol!! Not well, I would think. Reminds me of my brother in law (all his family shoot, wife (m sister), kids. Daughter was a Commonwealth bigbore competitor at 16… His reloads were the variable kind – never knew quite what was going to come out of the barrel. And woe betide you if held the gun wrong and he’d added a bit more powder to the load… Jeez it would hurt. My brother nearly tore of his bicep one day (mind you he was 10 at the time and the first time he had ever used a shotty. Dropped the stock just before he yanked the trigger… Brought tears to my eyes as well! Used to shoot Parries (Paradise Duck – quite a problem in parts of NZ). A flock of ducks would have a sentry which would spot you as you were stalking the main flock, and which would quickly range your gun (thats why initially we used standard loads) and fly ( <- note aviation reference) just out of range, squawking to all and sundry your location. The flock would keep clear. So jack in a round of Robert’s special home brew, and haaaang on! Blllaaaaaam! Exit the Parry sentry as he came over the top… Bugger. Ruined his day! /pix

i was catching a REX flight to Dubbo over the weekend.. I went through the metal detectors and then i got pulled up by a staff member telling me he wanted to test me for explosives.. He said it was a random test and is compulsery. The thing is, there was a bloke in front of me, who was pure arab desent. he looked like a terrorist. But they let him go, but checked me?!!! I thought yeah no worries, go ahead. He grabbed what looked like a dust buster, and then pulled material off the end of it, and fed it through a computer. It came up with ‘TNT found’. I was shitting myself. I knew i didnt put any bloody TNT in my pockets but maybe someone else did… i didnt know!! With half hour till my flight departed, i was shown to a room (with about 5 security officers around me, everyone starring at me like i was a terrorist.) They then took another test and it came up with TNT found!!! I then had to get stripped down to my underpants, and they checked my clothing. They found nothing, but by the time they had finished i missed my bloody flight! I argued with the idiots why the hell the thing read that i had tnt on my person and they said that it often malfunctions and gives a false reading! WELL WHY THE HELL ARE THEY USING IT !! I missed my flight, i was starred at by everyone and they thought i was a terrorist (im 100% australian by the way, id never do such a thing, especially in my own beautiufl country) all because of some stupid false reading test! It really shows how crap the security can be in Sydney.

Yes, home brew. The loop works fine, though it is now in a pillow about 16" square, with a pigtail to the amp. I drive it with considerable power from a conventional amplifier generating monaural output. The fluctuating field is dependent on current flow and square:cube says the aid has to be very close OR the power has to be quite high. Some music makes my earlobes glow. So… sofa? You can do multiple loops, or one racetrack oval. An oval about 6′ long and 18" wide – behind the cushions – would work if driven by a 100W consumer-quality amplifier. Keep the total impedance of the loop at eight ohms or more – using the numbers previously provided by some guy (I forget). If you play Rachmaninoff while sitting on that sofa, I hope you’ve had all your children.

Thank you all for your help. My dad and I should be able to manage setting something up. I am going to get him a Freeview box so he can get digital TV and radio. This means that with a loop system he will be able to hear it in comfort in any room with the loop set-up. Thanks again Mark

Response:

I wonder who wrote this?: Okay, I’ll amplify. 8^) The objective is an inductive loop – a winding of wire through which an audio signal passes, which creates a field within which the audio signal can be detected by appropriate equipment (i.e. telecoil). It is very much a radio transmitter and receiver, though at audio frequencies rather than the AM or FM bands. 1. Examine the amplifier. It should have a MONO mode. The output connectors (where the speakers would normally be connected) should say 4 OHMS or 8 OHMS. That’s important. 2. Buy INSULATED wire as follows: 18 gauge lamp cord is 0.0066 ohms per foot. 4 OHMS = 606′ 20 gauge wire is .011 ohms per foot. 4 OHMS = 364′ 22 gauge wire is .017 ohms per foot. 4 OHMS = 235′ 2. Pick a path around the room on the ceiling, or under the carpet. A room measuring 15′ x 20′ will have a perimeter of 70′, which will require a minimum of four complete turns of 22 gauge wire, six turns of 20 gauge wire, or nine turns of 18 gauge wire. 3. Pick a path around the room near the ceiling, and wind (or hang) your "coil", or loop, starting and ending at the amplifier. 4. Connect either end of the wire to the + terminal (red, usually) and the other end to the – terminal (black). Most amps have SPEAKER A and B switches; put this circuit on the unused one. 5. Turn on the music. Set the amp to MONO, and select the appropriate speaker circuit. Switch the aid to telecoil. Experiment with locations in the room. Enjoy (hopefully). NOTES: If the back of your amplifier says something like "8 OHMS MINIMUM", double the required wire length (load). Buy 120% of the wire you’ll need to ensure that you can complete the loop. You can add a POWER RESISTOR (Radio Shack, surplus, etc.) to ensure an appropriate load and reduce wire length, but the amplifier output will be divided between the loop and the resistor, proportionately, which means less radiated energy. This solution requires a LOT of energy so try not to compromise. If required, get 4 OHMS at 10W minimum. There’s another and simpler approach: I have a coil built into my favorite chair. It’s only 18" in diameter, but includes 120′ of 28 gauge wire (0.071 OHMS per foot). That’s about 25 turns of that relatively thin wire – easy to do, flexible, etc. If you’re happy with the result but annoyed by the LOW-FI effect, have your audiologist expand the bandwidth of the telecoil setting of your aid. It is probably set to the very narrow frequency range of a telephone rather than the broader range of music, etc. There’s strong 60 cycle (Hz) noise in your home from the house wiring. It may interfere. Last point: if you worry about the radiated energy, get a tinfoil hat. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -"HLE" <OO…@USMC.cc> wrote in message <news:ueDEb.9395$C87.9063@twister.socal.rr.com>… > "ken kerrison" <kkerri…@ozemail.com.au> wrote in message > news:9d801830.0312190058.88ec7cd@posting.google.com… > > A member of this group once set out details of how to instal an > > induction loop.
Mark take a look at the Minicon I purchased this (from someone else) and used it to just loop my telephone in my office. http://www.centrumsound.com/tv.html It may be just what you want. btw. there are several ways to interconnect your telephone. I did see a great free book that really has many other homemade devices. If I find it, I will post here. Charlie Mark Dibley <dib…@biochem.ucl.ac.uk> wrote in message

Alcohol shrinks brain & no stroke benefits Actually I subscribe to the "Buffalo" theory on this one. I’m working from memory here – but here’s the gist of the story…at least as it came to me…I believe the basis of this story started as a discussion between Norm and Cliff in a Cheers episode…

It attributed to Cliff Clavin and quoted here: http://www.rcminvitational.com/beer.shtml One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. And here’s how it went: "Well ya see Norm, it’s like this….A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted,it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers." —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–== Over 100,000 Newsgroups – 19 Different Servers! =—–

Hi Tim, Curiously there is some evidence. While I won’t characterize it as persuasive and much less as good, it should be sufficient to serve as rationalization for those who have decided to imbibe anyway. For the rest It may be worth keeping in mind, since suprising results continue to pop up every now and then. Stranger theories have been later verified. (Can’t think of one tho) A while back I had a good discussion about an Hawiian tofu study in which the tofu consumption was related to brain shrinkage, increased life span, and a reduction in loss of mental ability during aging. The facts escaped the authors of the study and were not well recieved by at least one group member, but still facts have a way of standing own their own mertit. Thomas

We don’ need no steenkin brain… http://www.alternativescience.com/no_brainer.htm ..The student in question was academically bright, had a reported IQ of 126 and was expected to graduate. When he was examined by CAT-scan, however, Lorber discovered that he had virtually no brain at all. Instead of two hemispheres filling the cranial cavity, some 4.5 centimetres deep, the student had less than 1 millimetre of cerebral tissue covering the top of his spinal column. The study, presented at a conference at the Royal Society in London, also found that the brains of these people were more likely to shrink compared with those who have a high sense of self esteem. She found that the brains of those with low self-worth were up to a fifth smaller than those who felt good about themselves. ..

The theory of two people in a bar? They had better have some good evidence – or their story will be written off as a rationalsition for their addictive drug-taking behaviour.

I’ll drink to that. Ken (heating strike water at this moment) Beautiful day to brew. No flies. Who else is concocting brain shrinking fluid this weekend?

Response:

could this be counteracted with the usual alcohol regimen (ie Durk and Sandy’s party pill II or RU-21)?

Exercise actually takes the edge off my appetite and I am likely to feel less hungry all morning… have my two-egg breakfast and tea, and I’m good to go until lunch.

Coffee will take away your appetite. Eating after noon (I get up late most of the time, like 1 in the afternoon, since I go to bed at 3 or 4 AM.

or do you not eat anything? I seem to remember something about exercising on an empty stomach in the morning being more conducive to fat burning. anybody have any ideas/suggestions? thanks!

everybody, thanks for all the replies. well, it looks like it depends on when I wake up. on weekdays I wake up early so I can forgo the breakfast before the workout. I should just drink plenty of water. but on weekends, by the time I am up, I am kind of famished. so I guess I need an egg or something before. not carby, just enough to fuel the workout. right? many thanks again for all the replies!! you’re the best! indrani.

My morning workouts, 1 hr of wieght training, usually begin at about 5 am. So I don’t eat anything prior to working out, however I do drink a 32 ounce home brew protien/carb shake during my workouts; 3 cups water 1 cup ice 1 cup raw fruit (strawberries my fav) 2 1/2 scoops protien powder (vanilla) 2 tbs honey works out to about 50/50 grams of protien/carbs.
Nothing to eat. Cup of tea, coffee. Then either (alternating days) 1. yoga, cardio or 2. Martial Arts and Weights. Then shower, then breakfast. Years ago, when I did The Zone, I had a small Zone snack before exercise. Usually, I’m not hungry in the morning till hours afterr exercise, but I usually eat breakfast anyway.

Response:

Sometimes I eat before working out, sometimes I don’t. It depends on my schedule and if I overslept or not. I’ve noticed that when I don’t eat, I am really hungry afterwards, and when I do eat, sometimes I get side cramps while working out. So when I do eat, I try to keep it to something light. — -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna

I seem to remember that the Eades, in "Protein Power" stated that exercising in the morning on an empty stomach promoted release of growth hormone, which if true would make it tend to promote fat burning and muscle development. I don’t have my book any more to check, so if I’ve not recalled this correctly, please feel free to comment. HG

I have a big glass or two of water (and my Synthroid pill <g) before my morning walk. It’s not good for you to exercise when dehydrated. In fact, in my weight-loss group the leaders always stressed to take a water bottle with you, even on walks, and keep sipping. I don’t do that but sometimes I wish I had brouht one! Exercise actually takes the edge off my appetite and I am likely to feel less hungry all morning… have my two-egg breakfast and tea, and I’m good to go until lunch. – Anne

I actually don’t eat anything before I exercise first thing in the morning, but immediately following, I have my first two glasses of water. I then eat whatever it is I’m having for breakfast. — Nancy Howells (don’t forget to switch it, and replace the to send mail).

I have not exercised in the morning for a while now. The first thing I do is get up and dress to go out for a cup of coffee to the convenience store/ gas pump a couple doors down from my house. That morning coffee does the trick! (I don’t make any coffee at all at home; I have teabags available if I don’t want coffee) I’ll get something like a couple chocolate chip cookies to go with coffee, then might have a submarine (blt with light oil and mayo) at the pizza/ sub down the street. In the evening I’ll open a can of Progresso soup or cook spaghetti with sauce.

Bill Philips of EAS/Body for Life fame promotes doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. He believes you will burn more fat due to fasting over night depleting your glycogen stores. With depleted glycogen, your body burns stored fat instead. It’s been a while since I saw his video/read the book/did the BFL program so maybe someone else can explain this theory better. What I’m wondering, though, if since low-carbing already depletes your glycogen stores and taps into fat burning, does this theory really pertain to us? BTW I almost always work out (lift weights, not cardio) on an empty stomach just because I don’t have time to eat in the morning before hitting the gym. Brenda 135/107

you know, i think this post will spark the usual debate about food before or after exercise. i DO NOT eat before i do yoga and i DO NOT eat before i go for my morning walk, without any difficulty. i suspect you will hear something different for different types of exercise. — read and post daily, it works! rosie the bumper sticker… is secular America’s Book of Proverbs.
