Alcohol shrinks brain & no stroke benefits

Question:

Well, if I’m to have a stroke —- I’d rather have it after a few drinks!!! :) don

The researchers also found that such alcohol consumption does not lower the risk of a stroke, contradicting findings from previous studies: http://go.jitbot.com/wife-overhit So much for my daily glass of wine. :-( — Sydney

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Alcohol shrinks brain & no stroke benefits Actually I subscribe to the "Buffalo" theory on this one. [snip] Therefore a daily pint is simply the best way to protect oneself from weak and sickly brain cells — and any shrinkage in brain size is only due to the weeding out of the weaker members of the herd. The theory of two people in a bar? They had better have some good evidence – or their story will be written off as a rationalsition for their addictive drug-taking behaviour. FUTURE DARWIN AWARD: Despite numerous urgings of friends and neighbors and large posted warning signs, this ditzy numbskull takes himself out of the gene pool by walking into a brewing discussion group populated by Irish and Germans and refers to beer drinking as "addictive drug-taking behavior".

….and one annoyed Greek brewer who enjoys what he concocts immensely.  If anything, it’s got me off of drinking too much Vodka and Ouzo!  Don’t worry too much about what these worrying piss ants say….drinking in moderation is VERY good for you.  The ancient Greeks had a wonderful saying…"Pan metron ariston"..which means  "everything in moderation."  So to also quote an wise, old Armenian…."Relax …have a home brew." Alcohol shrinks brain & no stroke benefits Actually I subscribe to the "Buffalo" theory on this one. I’m working from memory here – but here’s the gist of the story…at least as it came to me…I believe the basis of this story started as a discussion between Norm and Cliff in a Cheers episode…

It attributed to Cliff Clavin and quoted here: http://www.rcminvitational.com/beer.shtml One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. And here’s how it went: "Well ya see Norm, it’s like this….A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted,it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers." —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–==  Over 100,000 Newsgroups – 19 Different Servers! =—–

Darwin says that those that survive are the strongest.  My brain is full of very strong brain cells! Tom Veldhouse

From my reading, Henry’s post wasn’t describing an either/or situation.  Just curious, Tim, what’s your picture of the "typical" homebrewer?   Ricky

I’m working from memory here – but here’s the gist of the story…at least as it came to me…I believe the basis of this story started as a discussion between Norm and Cliff in a Cheers episode… They point out that in a Buffalo herd, occasionally the weak and sick members of the herd are the ones who trail behind the herd and are picked of by predators.  While the loss of these members are unfortunate, it ultimately strengthens the herd because the strongest and most able members of the herd survive and are able to better protect each other.  Its better to lose a few sickly buffalo rather than having the whole herd suffer by lagging behind trying protect its weakest members. They go on to argue that this is also true for brain cells.  Alcohol kills off the weakest and most sickly brain cells, but ultimately the strongest ones survive improving the efficiency and effectiveness of those remaining. Hi Tim,     Curiously there is some evidence. While I won’t characterize it as persuasive and much less as good, it should be sufficient to serve as rationalization for those who have decided to imbibe anyway. For the rest It may be worth keeping in mind, since suprising results continue to pop up every now and then. Stranger theories have been later verified. (Can’t think of one tho)      A while back I had a good discussion about an Hawiian tofu study in which the tofu consumption was related to brain shrinkage, increased life span, and a  reduction in loss of mental ability during aging. The facts escaped the authors of the study and were not well recieved by at least one group member, but still facts have a way of standing own their own mertit. Thomas

The Bible says that wine makes the heart glad.  God is the one handing out strokes, not the researchers.  Better have that wine so you don’t piss Him off. Bart

We don’ need no steenkin brain… http://www.alternativescience.com/no_brainer.htm ..The student in question was academically bright, had a reported IQ of 126 and was expected to graduate.  When he was examined by CAT-scan, however, Lorber discovered that he had virtually no brain at all. Instead of two hemispheres filling the cranial cavity, some 4.5 centimetres deep, the student had less than 1 millimetre of cerebral tissue covering the top of his spinal column. Professor Lorber has identified several hundred people who have very small cerebral hemispheres but who appear to be normal intelligent individuals. Some of them he describes as having ‘no detectable brain’, yet they have scored up to 120 on IQ tests… http://www.guardian.co.uk/life/farout/story/0,13028,1053444,00.html …In the 19th century, German anatomist Leopold Auerbach observed a complex network of nerve cells in the human digestive tract. This nerve bundle, a "second brain" containing more nerve cells than the spinal cord, was recently rediscovered by Michael Gershon at Columbia University. Professor Wolfgang Prinz in Munich has also studied this, and thinks it could govern some of our emotional and physical responses to thoughts and events – hence, perhaps, "gut feelings". .. Maybe they just have really low self-esteem… http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3224674.stm Low self-esteem ’shrinks brain’ People with a low sense of self worth are more likely to suffer from memory loss as they get older, say researchers. The study, presented at a conference at the Royal Society in London, also found that the brains of these people were more likely to shrink compared with those who have a high sense of self esteem. She found that the brains of those with low self-worth were up to a fifth smaller than those who felt good about themselves. ..

could this be counteracted with the usual alcohol regimen (ie Durk and Sandy’s party pill II or RU-21)?
