Lids for converted Kegs

Categories: Brewing Equipment

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Matt, I originally bought a mash tun complete w/ lid from SABCO some years ago.  The top is cut out to a perfect 12" hole.  The original outfit came with a corning ware ss lid (now running about $26+ at SABCO).  I later found the exact same lid for $5 at one of these cookware places at one of the outlet malls.  The latest price I’ve found is a little over $8 for a slightly heavier version of the ss lid by another manufacturer at a different outlet mall.  Check one out the next time you travel.  They can’t be beat.  I’ve even seen them at Target for about $12 for the ss lid. Cheers, ky_dan47

Uh….. but I’m not the one looking for one – I’m pretty well geared up – but thanks… Matt

Response:

you should be able to buy an anodized aluminum pizza pan at meijers(the one near me has them) or online from a resturaunt supply jerry

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yep… pizza pans are a great piece of brewing equipment.  I have one with a notch cut in the edge, so that I can cover the pot while I’m using my immersion chiller (the chiller tubing exits thru the notch). Also doubles as a bucket cover during racking (racking hose/cane goes in thru the notch). — How do you prevent them from rusting?  Only ones I can find are those non-stick coated steel and when I cut my notch for my immersion chiller, it inevitably rusts there.  I’m a little wary about using a paint product being so close to my beer.

Homebrew Heaven has them on their Brewpots page. Also check your local thrift store. I went in to get a small SS sauce pan and was amazed at all the pots, pans and lids they had. Burp, -Dan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have built a 2 tier HERMS System. My system consist of three 1/2 barrel sanke type kegs. The openings were cut with a plasma cutter so I have 12" diameter perfect circle opponents. I guess I need three 13" lids. Does anyone know where I can get these? — Sam George Daher Katy, TX

Have someone make them for you…. This sounds like a great opportunity to barter homebrew – ask around for a welder that is "cool", go visit and explain what you want done…. or call your local community college and just ask the welding instructor if he thought any of his students would be interested…. he might just do it himself…. as it happens I took a welding class last fall (I redefine the word "crap" when it comes to welding) but in the end, the instructor did the work for me at converting two kegs into kettles – for free.   For my own kettle(s), I have those serving trays that appetizers come on… they are much more heavy duty than the disposable kind…. true, they don’t have handles, but  they are large enough they fit over the top of the entire keg, not just the opening. This way I can leave the keg covered while my chiller is at work… I can also have   them on and not worry (too much) about boil overs since the handles of the keg let the steam escape… In case I DO want a tight fit, coincidentally the lid for my old brew pot that came with my outdoor cooker is a perfect fit for the opening of the keg – poke around a restaurant supply store or maybe your own kitchen for something that might just fit.
