Passing of a friend

Categories: Brewing Beer

Question:

[snip] Thank you for sharing my grief.

I share your grief, but you have to have a certain amount of pride in your heart; after all, your carboy went down in the line of duty, and that’s something to remember. Also, it didn’t have any beer in it at the time, which would have been a far greater tragedy. Ah, what the hell do I know: I just had a racking cane split on me two weeks ago, and that’s my first casualty in 2.5 years of brewing. I don’t know grief yet. — -Mike

I just brewed a nice pale ale and racked to my secondary.  As usual, I soaked the 6.5 gallon primary for a few days with soapy water to loosen the munge inside before I scrubbed the bejeezus out of it.  This followed by a hot rinse and a bleach rinse (1/4 tsp in a gallon of water).  As I took the carboy to the garage to rest up for the next batch, I lost my grip on it and broke the neck on it.  This was my first carboy and has been "Old Faithful" the entire time.  I will probably try to clean up the break and use it for a bank or something, right now you could easily lose an arm on the thing.  I have a few other carboys, so I can still brew.  I will be replacing the carboy, but there is still the sentimental attachment to this one. Thank you for sharing my grief. JT
