Funny taste
Question:
Is there anything you can do to prevent the soapy yeast by-product?
IF the soap is a by-product, I cannot think of anything that would prevent it. If it is, well, soap, then a rinsing will do. I have had at least one beer I judged in competition that HAD to be a result of soap in the bottle. Cheers, Mike
Response:
Thanks for the tips – I don’t think it was actual soap since I used the no rinse sanitizer to clean everything and bleach for the bottles (I don’t think bleach would leave a soapy taste???) I seem to remember the off flavors even before I bottled anyway. I’ll just wait and see how my next one turns out (just bottled yesterday from the secondary – tastes great already for a flat, warm beer!) Thanks again, — Jason

Just for info sake, what was the no rinse sanitizer? Cheers, Mike

Mike, he said, "no-rinse sanitizer (can’t remember the name – it came with my kit in a Ziploc with green label". — [Apparent Rennerian 567.7, 95.9] Al – rukbat at optonline dot net

Thanks, I missed that… I don’t use ANYTHING that comes in a ziplock that I didn’t package, or that wasn’t packaged by the manufacturer… Cheers, Mike

On my last brew (Bavarian wheat) I noticed a funny, soap like aftertaste to the beer. It wasn’t that bad and mellowed some with time, but I’d really like to know what caused it for future reference. The kit was a specialty grain / extract kit – steeped grains for 30 minutes then boiled everything for 60. I sanitized using a no-rinse sanitizer (can’t remember the name – it came with my kit in a Ziploc with green label, does this help?). The bottles were run through the dishwasher using a cup of bleach on heavy wash with rinse cycle and heat dry. Any ideas as to what may have caused the taste? Could it have been the bleach? Any ideas or similar experiences would be appreciated. — Jason Mitchell

Liquid Cascade seems to dissolve more easily and leave less residue in the dishwasher

Response:
Hops can give a soapy sort of taste. I remember Bass in the 1960s having this.
