bacteria in beer

Categories: Brewing Beer

Question:

I have been brewing beer for about six years and recently started using town water. That is when my problems seem to have started. My beer is  going cloudy and almost like vinegar inside of 3-4 weeks. Is it possible town drinking water is not suitable even though it is chlorinated and meets all standards’ Any help would be apreciated. Thank you

Well, if it is the water, boil it before you use it. This will drive off the chlorine as well as killing any bacteria which may be present. I don’t know if chlorinated water can cause trouble, but it may be the case. If this doesn’t get better after boiling your water, it must be something else. In any case, you should always boil chlorinated water, since chlorine can react with phenols in beer to give horrible medicine flavors.

Sounds like you’re getting acetobacter infections if your beer is turning into vinegar.  Review your sanitation practices carefully. — Dean Fikar (Remove the 3 letters that don’t look like they belong:

Hi jamie, Yes it is possible that your drinking water is not the best for brewing but it may not be organic. Have a water analysis done. Water pipes and any other storage places where your water may sit is also suspect. When you say "almost like vinegar" though it turns my mind toward organic. Keep us posted. Cheers, Tom
