Sloe Gin
Question:
Hello there and sorry if this is the wrong newsgroup to post to but it was the only one I could find that seemed remotely suitable. I would like to make sloe gin but as yet seem unable to find a recipe. If any of you could fill me in it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Rebecca

My simple recipe is as follows: Crush one pound of sloes (in a plastic bag) with a rolling pin – but do not smash the kernals. Mix the fruit with about 5 oz sugar and place in a wide-necked bottle or jar. Add one litre of gin and close bottle tightly. Place in cool dark place and shake for 30 seconds most days for 8 weeks. Strain thru cotton wool, bottle and leave for as long as you have the patience. I usually start on mine within days. Some people add almond essence. I don’t – one can sense enough of this type of flavour naturally extracted from the sloe pits. Incidentally, if you have the patience to pick the stones (pits) out of the mush after filtering, the remaining fruit/skin mush can be mixed with about one pound of melted chocolate (NOT cooking chocolate), spooned into small paper cake holders and chilled. The result is some really exotic candies. Dave Hutson, Cornwall, UK DHHutson, 18 Tredova Cres., FALMOUTH, Cornwall, UK Tel:44 (0)1326 319943
