Samuel Adams Triple Bock

Categories: Brewery

Question:

IMHO it is not a pleasant experience, but it does come in a really cool bottle peace james

Response:

I opened and tried my ‘95 SATB last night.  BLEAGH!  Maybe ‘95 was a bad year.  It needed maybe another three or four years of aging (or another 30 or 40).  My impression was that it was completely out of balance, with too much maple in the beginning, and a very unpleasant "soy sauce" like bitterness to the finish.  The sweetness was cloying, not attractive, and not at all like a good brandy.

Agreed.  That stuff is foul.

The bottle makes a cool candle holder.  What was in the bottle was less than pleasent.

Response:

your problem with the ‘95 SATB is that it is now ‘97.   Sam doesn’t expect anyone to keep their beer, just drink it as quick as they make it. Off the production line, they not bad.  Never as good as a homemade one though.  Did you kill it with heat or light over the past two years? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I opened and tried my ‘95 SATB last night. Wrong!!! This is a beverage that is supposed to age well for many, many years.  There are those that do not like the taste and that is fine.  But it is still a finly crafted brew.  Viva la difference!!!

Anyone tasted this Samuel Adams Triple Bock.  I got several bottle of this stuff as a gift from a friend.  It says brewed in 1995 with 1 pound of malt per bottle to be enjoyed in a wine glass or brandy snifter like a fine port.  To me it tasted and smelled like soy sauce.  Anyone else find this?? I have a supply.  Mine all tasted like a cross between brandy and port. Soy…no, didn’t notice that.

I’m with you. I think mine might have been ‘94 however, but I did drink at least 3 bottles, from different stores, and thought they were all like a respectable brandy.

the contents now, it will claw its way down your throat like a rabid, alcohol-soaked rat. Right here, right now. . . this beer is perhaps the most swallow-defiant substance that is marketed to a refined, beer-drinking consumer base. To quote Kermit the frog, "it’s not easy being green." It’s even less easy drinking it.

I would generally consider it to be a low quality malt liquer, at least this bottle was.

I have had Sam Adams Triple Bock at the brewery in Boston while on a tour.  They had piles of 5 gallon and larger (30 gallons?) of oak barrels filled with SA Triple Bock!  We had a taste of some from a keg in the sampling room, it was very good, yes sherry/port tasting, but good nonetheless.  no it is not what one would consider "A good drinkin’ beer!" but a high quality product, that with age may become a phenominal product!  I have two bottles, wont’t open one until 2000, the other, well who knows when.  If you are ever in a bar that has a little wooden keg on the end, just ask, it may be SA Triple Bock, order a glass, you’ll be glad you did! Storage volume and vessel may have made all the difference.

A friend and I tried it when it first came out and found it to be a way too rich.  The taste was extremely sweet.  We said it tasted like maple syrup…..then read the bottle and found that was a major ingredient! At $4 per bottle for 7 or 8oz, it just wasn’t even close to worth it. It really tasted pretty bad.

Here is an article I found at a pretty funny web site… http://subjungle.com/badbeer/bbhof.htm#dec They rate "Bad Beers" and this one got the worst rating of 5 puking beer drinkers. I’d like to state for the record that I think Boston Beer Company can and does produce some excellent beer, such as Old Fezziwig and the Longshot Pale Ale. I am also aware that there is quite a following of beer enthusiasts who think S.A.’s Triple Bock is a marvel for the beer-drinking world to behold. In acknowledgment of that, I would like to state without obscurity that it is my opinion such people are a bunch of spineless, brainwashed, pseudo-beer-nerd-pin-heads prostrating before any grain-god, golden calf that presents itself in a corked, blue bottle. I’ve held off reviewing this beer for almost a year in the futile hope that it would improve with short-term aging. What Samuel Adam’s Triple Bock is defies digestion but if it were a steak, I would send it back to be cooked until it had at least stopped bleeding all over the plate. After one year of maturation, this beer is quite discernibly unripe and syrupy, but I genuinely believe it will mellow with the years and the tag on the beer suggests that the brewers themselves think as much also. As a sampling from the bottles of the ‘95 Brew Reserve tastes right now, it is a grotesquely raw piece of work that should be put away to age for a very long time. . . or perhaps just buried and put to rest, R.I.P. The 8.45 ounce bottle costs about five dollars, and if you uncork it and drink the contents now, it will claw its way down your throat like a rabid, alcohol-soaked rat. Right here, right now. . . this beer is perhaps the most swallow-defiant substance that is marketed to a refined, beer-drinking consumer base. To quote Kermit the frog, "it’s not easy being green." It’s even less easy drinking it. In my opinion, a well written review, and I still want to try it.  I will only buy one bottle, and not a 6-pack though. — Small wheel turns by the fire and rod,  Big wheel turns by the grace of God. YES!!! You’re the first person other than myself that got that impression from SA Triple Bock. When I tried it, I swore my buddies were playing a practical joke on me, making me drink soy sauce. I generally like SA beers, but this one was horrible. Try Hair of the Dog’s Belgian Triple. It’s lighter in color, but sooooooo…. much better.

I tasted it with a couple of friends–all of us seasoned beer and wine drinkers. All three of us found the stuff to be completely nasty. Smelled like gymnasium locker, tasted even worse. Not one of us was even able to get past the first sip.   Apparently there are some people who really think it’s great, but I can’t imagine why. tf
