RICH BAVARIANS (BEER, I MEAN)

Categories: Brewery

Question:

I LOVE certain Bavarian lagers for their dark, rich maltiness, a certain quality that I have difficulty describing in terms of a particular grain or ingredient and I have been unable to reproduce it at home.  In particular, my favorites are         Hofbrau DARK RESERVE         Salvator Bock by Paulaner  (not dark but it has that special                 quality)   and a more recent discovery…         Frankishers Urbier by Kulmbacher Reichelbrau 1) I have started brewing all grain with some success and I would appreciate any help with regard to recipes or general ingredients for these beers. 2)  What is the meaning of FRANKISHES URBIER?  Is it a brand name or a particular style. Cheers to you all Eric Baltimore

:2)  What is the meaning of FRANKISHES URBIER?  Is it a brand name or a :particular style. I’m not German, but I’ve lived here for the last 2 1/2 years and I have an interest in beer. This is my piece of help I think it should be Frankisches urbier. Frankisches means it comes from Franken. Nowadays a part of the Bavarian Free State, but they have a different dialect of German. Without being too sure, I’d say it’s the northernmost part of the Bavarian Free State. If the beer came from Bavaria (Bayern in German), it’d be called Bayerisches urbier. Urbier I guess is something like "original beer" So my translation would be : Original beer from Franken. : : :Cheers to you all : :Eric :Baltimore : : — Max-Planck-Institut fuer Kernphysik     Postfach 103980 D-69029 Heidelberg Maybe I’m wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time, it won’t be the last!!

other mashing methods, but also because they use local malts (in particular, Moravian malts are good for these Bavarian lagers)  In particular, my favorites are  Hofbrau DARK RESERVE  Salvator Bock by Paulaner  (not dark but it has that special   quality)   and a more recent discovery…  Frankishers Urbier by Kulmbacher Reichelbrau next time you’re in Regensburg, Bavaria, go to the Kneitinger Brewery

(in the heart of the town) for a great tasting bock, their specialty.  A jewel of bocks from Bavaria. 1) I have started brewing all grain with some success and I would appreciate any help with regard to recipes or general ingredients for these beers. Think about utilizing double decoction for that special taste depth.

2)  What is the meaning of FRANKISHES URBIER?  Is it a brand name or a particular style. This is getting to be a sort of trendy name used by Bavarian brewers.

It simply means original, ancient, old.  And so its a word that’s usually used for the original style of that community.  I think its a subtle linguistic reference to what I perceive to be a distinction (in Bavaria) between the country style and the city style. Cheers to you all Eric Baltimore
