Question:
Guys, anyone out there using the SS false bottoms from Morebeer.com? Ideally I’d like to have one that I could use in a Gott and a converted sankey – not sure whether 1) the domed version would work in a keg and 2) whether the 12" version would fit in a keg – anyone know for sure? (ie item AG404 vs AG405). Also, their SS pump is on sale, and it looks to be a beauty. Anyone using this to move boiling wort? It claims to be self-priming, but as I understand it, mag pumps can’t be self priming. Any idea of how the impeller works on this unit? http://www.morebeer.com/index.html?page=detail.php3&pid=H360 Cheers! — Drew Avis ~ http://www.strangebrew.ca
Response:
Hi Drew, I just checked out the B3 ad. They didn’t mention mag drive so I would assume that the impellers are directly driven. More important is that they didn’t mention temperature ratings and were recommending them for moving wine. B3 does sell a high temp March pump that is mag coupled. I think it goes for about $120 . I purchase both my pump item # hd310 and stainless steel false bottom from them. The pump was $119 and the fb was $19. I highly recomend them both. visit my page www.geocities.com/sgdaher/brewery and you will see photos of them. Dont forget to sign the guest book. Cheers… — Sam "George" Daher Network Consultant

It will work fine. You will just have that much less wort below the FB. Not enough to scoff at. Go for it.. — Sam "George" Daher Network Consultant
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thanks George – Do you think the 12" false bottom would work in a keg? I notice you have the 10" version. I’m asking because I’d like to be able to use my Gott as a mashtun for smaller brews, and a 12" would fit better. I notice that the SS pump I was looking at is not a mag pump – their SS mag pump is $295 (but it looks amazing!) — Drew Avis ~ http://www.strangebrew.ca I purchase both my pump item # hd310 and stainless steel false bottom from them. I got my Gott (sorry…) from B3, as well as the false bottom. The only problem I had was the braided line from the FB to the spigot fell off once. Two SS hose clamps fixed that. I also have their hi-temp pump. I don’t believe the one they have on sale is for hi-temp applications. Mike

The SS false bottoms are terrific — they don’t float and are easy to clean. I don’t know about a sankey keg but they do work fine in a Gott. ben

I’m not sure that mag drive is a necessity, though. Most commercial sanitary pumps have seals. In some ways, a mag drive is harder to keep clean, because of the cavity behind the impeller. Mag drive pumps are mainly made for applications where fluid leakage is a problem (ie: corrosives). A good sanitary design (flushing the pump flushes behind the impeller) with a seal is fine. But anyway, a 70 foot shutoff head?! That’s almost 30 psi. There are basically two common types of self priming pumps, and one of them is a cheat. Positive displacement are the only true self priming style (that I can think of off hand, somebody correct me if I’m wrong). The other "self priming" style has a large cavity that is filled with the pumped fluid. This allows liquid to seal around the impeller, and as the pump runs, the vacuum draws more fluid up from the intake. Eventually, the air is displaced, and it begins pumping. But it thrashes the liquid in the cavity. These are commonly sold as water pumps for shallow well or wet wells, and they have a very distinctive shape. But they always leave a significant amount of fluid in the cavity-it’s not possible to completely pump them out. So I would guess that the B3 pump is of the positive displacement variety. Probably a flexible impeller pump (though a 70 foot shutoff head is pretty respectable for a flex pump–many only go one atmosphere, or about 33 feet). But two atms isn’t out of the range of possibility. The other PD type pumps (such as a carbonator pump) have MUCH higher discharge heads. So, in answer, I doubt it would be good for pumping hot wort. They are good for wine, however, because they are very low shear. Probably be good for a RIMS, if it will take the temperature. On the other hand, Jabsco is a popular maker of these (I have a small SS Jabsco myself), and I wrote to them asking about the highest temperature impeller available. It was well under 200 degrees F, if I recall, but I think you could get to 170F. My wort is typically near 180F (I shut the heat off, wait 5 minutes to add aroma hops, then steep them for 10 minutes) when it’s ready to be pumped, so it might work, though you’d be stressing the pump.
