Conditions, New England???
Question:
Hi. I’m heading up to the Portsmouth, NH/Kittery, ME area next week. Would appreciate general info on course/greens conditions. I understand that Spring has been somewhat delayed (and I’ve never played the Northeast anyway!) Thanks.
It is true the weather has been horrible. We’ve been struggling to get out of the sixties for a week and the 50s in May. Most courses seem to be shaping up, a few weeks behind. There wasn’t much snow which means the fairways weren’t full of water and the mushy stuff we’re accustomed to. Wentworth By the Sea is great and I’m sure in perfect condition. I really like a sporty little layout in Cape Arundel GC in Kennebunkport, home course of the President Bush. Great conditioning, perfect greens, alot of fun, about half the price of Wentworth. Only 20-30 minutes from Kittery and Shipyard Brewery and Pub right in the port for dinner.

It’s still cool up here,60’s mostly and has been constantly windy. However, the courses are drying out quickly. Portsmouth CC is the best conditioned course all season around here and is open to the public at most times but weekends are very crowded and tee times are needed anytime. It’s very long with big greens. It’s mostly open with beautiful views of surrounding Great Bay,but wind off the water is constant. Nearby is Pease GC in Newington. Okay shorter but tight challenging course. There are several other nice clubs within 15-20 miles and all are in decent shape for the winter we had. Have fun and bring your sweater.

Lorna; Can’t really tell about Kittery NH or Portsmouth ME. But I am in Bangor ME about 2 1/2 Hrs. north of Kittery, and whil 4 weeks ago the courses that I play weren’t in that great a shape the last 4 week things have dried up nicely, and the courses are in good shape. Bill Holsomback

The conditons are hit and miss. I think the late spring has delayed some of the green work because most of the greens I’ve played on have not been rolled and are quite bumpy. Also a lot of winter kill. On the plus side, it hit 80 today (last time was back in september 96) and most of the faiways are in good shape. Have fun and oh ya, don’t forget the bug juice. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi. I’m heading up to the Portsmouth, NH/Kittery, ME area next week.
