Belgian and/or brewpub in NYC?

Categories: Brewery

Question:

You might want to try Ginger Man on 35th.  Roughly 150 brews.  Leffe Blonde on tap, if you like, plus other Belgian ales and barley wines.

You meant 36th Street, east of 5th Ave. 65 taps, and at least a hundred bottles, usually two beers on handpump. Incredibly crowded after 5:00 until about, oh, 11:00 Monday-Friday. And a wealth of strong beers on tap. Hint: go. And drink the 13 oz. glasses, not the 20 oz. if you want to sample several. Stay away from Times Square Brewery, at 42nd St.  If you want a brewpub you can try Heartland Brewery, 50th, between 6th-7th.

Or Commonwealth, at Rockefeller Center. Good beer, somewhat expensive food. You had to go look at the skating rink anyway. If you go to Times Square Brewery, don’t drink there. You’ve been warned… But if you’re feeling lazy, just wander to Virgil’s, 44th and Broadway or so. Good beer selection, very touristy, food isn’t bad either. Occasionally you can find a bottled Belgian there. Also, Belgo restaurant has Belgian beers, and moules frites to boot.. Hi– Somewhere a while back I remember reading about a bar in New York City specializing in Belgian beers. Anyone know where this is?  Barring that, does anyone know of a good brewpub in the Times Sq area– I’ll be in the City next week for a convention at the Marriott Marquis.  Thanks  Paul    Troy NY

Paul, The Belgian beer bar you’re probably thinking about is called Burp Castle.  Right next door is Brewsky’s.  Up the block is McSorley’s Ale House. Get ready for a pub crawl, as there is an amazing variety of pubs within a 5 block radius.  Cheapest that I’m aware of, is the Saint Mark’s Alehouse.  During happy hour, most pints are only $2.50, and they’ve got about 30 microbrews or imports on tap.  The food is decent too. I see at Pubcrawler.com: http://www.pubcrawler.com/Template/ that Burp Castle may be closed, but not to worry, dBa is far better, they even have cask condtioned ales.  Do a search at Pubcrawler.com and you’ll get all the info you need. Enjoy! George

As you mentioned later, the Burp Castle is currently closed: pending renewal of their license, which they somehow forgot to do. Brewsky’s next door has access to the same extensive bottle list though, much of which is Belgian. Close by is Belgo (on Lafayette, below Astor Place), which sells only Belgian beers. The wait staff isn’t well-known for their beer knowledge, and the prices in this trendy restaurant are a bit high, but the Belgian food is very good and hundreds of bottles stay in their stable. dba always has a couple of Belgians on tap plus dozens in bottles. St. Mark’s Alehouse, I’ve never even seen. Report back if you go! (This probably belongs in rec.food.drink.beer though.) DJW
