Beer and Cigar Runners
Question:
: I am curious as to how many people are like me and enjoy a good cold beer : and/or cigar once in awhile. Count me in. I brew my own beer, and they go great with a fine cigar! Beer consumption nearly daily, a cigar about once a week. …and chances are your times lag, dont they?
Maybe not. College runners are some of the biggest drinkers I know of. Flat out wasted Saturday night after a meet but up a dawn the next morning for that 15+ mile run. As for the smoking cigar part, Div II nationals last year I was sitting around with some All American’s puffing on some cigars (the real cheap, good tasting kind) and throwing back the beers. Not a great habit year round, but once in a while will do no harm. Party hard…run harder. Erik (thankful it is cross country time again)

Often I will drink one or two beers on the days I do not run. I enjoy carrots with blue cheese dip and Bud Light. I drink less in the summer because it is so hard to stay hydrated. From five miles to the end of a 10k there would be no benefit from smoking. Brad

And besides, after the fifth mile I’d be too exhausted to light up anyway… — Charlie Williams

I am & I do! I live near New Orleans & the nearby Abita brewery makes a great assortment of beers which I enjoy. My wife & I have smoked an <<occasional good cigar since we were married 12 years ago. We have some of our best talks sitting in our back yard sipping an Abita Turbo Dog & puffing a Leon Jiminez or La Gloria Cubana (which, in case Customs is listening, is a DOMINICAN cigar). I’m not a star runner or athlete — I’m 5-9, 165 lbs., and I mostly run 5Ks in the 24 minute range. But I have never sensed that my cigar smoking affects my endurance. And the beer doesn’t help me LOSE weight. But I’d miss both of them.

I guess I’m out numbered but I prefer Killians Red or even a Rolling Rock to those "fork beers" as i call them, but no cigars. . . -Andy

Makes me look forward to being done with New York in another 5-1/2 weeks — have to be sure to lay in a cigar or two for the end of that one. The beer I’m already indulging in … *Dana who recently won a pack of Guinness Draught in a 10K

I am curious as to how many people are like me and enjoy a good cold beer and/or cigar once in awhile. Do to my serious training I never go out and drink beer with the people after work. Also I have a dog and a house to take care of. But once in awhile I do like to treat myself to a good German Beer, or two, and a fake Cuban Cigar (I don’t inhale and no need to preach about second hand smoke either).
I don’t see any harm in it. In college when I was in my best shape, I drank a six-pack 3-4 times a week.

and Beer is one of the best motivators I know of. I have no interest in cigars. I am looking forward to finishing this long bike ride I have coming up and cozying up to a Bass Ale while I sit and watch the surf roll in and out. Andrew Heiz

You can drink lots of beer and even smoke occasionally and still improve as a runner. Of course, this is not the recommended approach, but it’s better than smoking and drinking and not running. If you’re really serious about getting better or concerned about overall long-term health, keep the vices to a minimum. Gordon in CT, sometime heavy drinker, OK runner, former Boston qualifier (96)

I really find this very relaxing and am sure neither hurt my running. I like to treat myself to this every so often, kinda like getting a milk shake to treat yourself after a hard week of training. :) Sounds like a great idea for after the marathon next week too. :) David/IndyRunr
Beer, yes. Milk shakes, absolutely. But cigars? (As an ex-smoker, I don’t tempt fate.) Mike "TriBop" Tennent Remove "nospam." for email reply WebRunner Running Page http://www.webrunner.com/webrun/running/running.html My Model Railroad Page http://www.webrunner.com/webrun/srr/

Sounds like you should join the Hash House Harriers, aka drinkers with a running problem. It’s a fun way to relieve the pressure of PRs, race management, etc., and it’s a great equalizer. I’ve been with the Mud Hens Hash group in Toledo for several years. Just check it out on the net and surf on in! Metamoron.

For years I’ve been enjoying the requisite cigars whenever I’ve gone backcountry camping/canoeing. I always keep a few on hand at the house now, lighting up occasionally when friends are visiting. (especially American friends…they love those Cubans…legal up here). I’ve even smoked the night before a long run, with the only ill effect being that I seemed to be able to sing like Louis Armstrong as I ran. As for beer, probably like most runners I have the occasional beer or two, sometimes right after a nice easy run. I had a good laugh over that "smoking and racing" thread on R.R a few weeks back. I swear one of these days I’ll run a half marathon while keeping a huge stogie lit the whole time. Maybe a deep puff at every aid station. After I cross the finish line I’ll just stand there in my shorts and singlet and finish the sucker off, crabbing after the volunteers to find me a damn ashtray
