Question:
If I understand you then, we are using a less convenient system just so that the small minority of people who want to use cell phones instead of a based computer can do it. Doesn’t that sound like the tail wagging the dog?
Frederick, Get a grip…. this is an RV newsgroup… a lot of RVers connect to the group using a cellphone…. they are on the road. Try and get the connection… RV, cellphone, on the road. Why can’t you just show a little consideration for them. Hunter
Response:
Are you that dense man? This newsgroup is about rvs and rv travel. Sense the connection? Travel, newsgroups, connections, modem connection points, irate people when you hog a phone connection, high phone bills, Those of us who do travel and try to stay in touch, are not sitting in our computer rooms with unlimited connection time. See, we’re not talking about you, we’re talking about the rest of us. When home I can spend as much time surfing and and reading the newsgroups. On the road, I need to keep track of my banking, send email and occasionally pick up on the newsgroups. Believe me, you can rack up a lot of time when hooked up on a cell phone. So you see, it’s not the few driving the "many", it’s common sense. Furthermore, this Usenet and the rules say no binaries and no HTML. If Freddy doesn’t like that, he’s free to start another net using netnews protocol. They’re all over the place – I occasionally participate in corel’s network where binaries and HTML are the norm. He’ll have a little work on his hands getting the backbone sites to carry the network but it can be done – Templeton’s Clarinet is an example. Response:
Would you like to take a poll of those using cell phones for connections versus those not? You would lose. I still say that you are in the minority by a long stretch. I will continue to use plain text because I don’t want to listen to the bleating, but I still also say that it’s the tail wagging the dog. The minority clinging to a method that suits their convenience with no regard for the inconvenience they cause for others. The history of technological systems is that when a better one comes along and the cost of changing is miniscule, You do it. I guess the harness makers were pissed off about the automobile too. Irrelevant. I don’t connect with a cell phone and I still prefer plain text. And what’s more, I’m fairly certain I’m with the majority here. I’m much more interested in what people have to say than how fancy they can make it look, and the quicker I can download it, the better. I see no benefit whatsoever to using HTML on newsgroups. They’re working on the new netnews standard right now. It specifically says no HTML. I see no benefit whatsoever to using HTML on newsgroups. What am I missing?

I presume that you have noticed that all my posts are in plain text. I just find that when you are having a dialogue that involves many exchanges the use of colored text to distinguish one from the other makes it easier to read. I guess when high definition TV comes in most of you guys will still be using the 525 line system. Before anybody tries to jump me on that I included the non-visible lines. How the hell did you make the jump to color. It must have been quite an emotional trauma. Yer can still see the picture can’t yer. I thought old people were supposed to live in the past. I guess I’m an exception, but I didn’t realize it until you started on about HTML. BTW, if I’m dense, there are a lot of people out there that would have done a lot better in life with my kind of denseness, Frederick – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – on the topic of HTML vs plain text posts: I see no benefit whatsoever to using HTML on newsgroups. Have been checking this group out and was wondering if any of you folks have ever been on one of the barge cruises. That’s where you put your camper and truck both on a barge. They can get 13 campers or motorhomes one one barge, you have full hook-ups and cn put your awning out. There is also a party barge. Just wondering if any of you had any comments on this. Thanks in advance. Sheryl
Response:
I checked them out and found it very expensive for what they offer. You can park your RV and take A Delta Steamboat Cruise for about the same price with food and entertainment but it is a good concept Dave from Cincy FMCA 280708

Ralph, What is it that stops people from changing their news and mail program so as to use HTML. I find it so much easier to identify whose talking about what in a complicated exchange by just changing the color of the text. I stay with the regular text just because others want me to, but it would be better if they changed to HTML. I have changed my news and mail program about three times as improvements have been made. How do we make progress if everybody decides and coerces others to use a horse and buggy? Am I missing something, bandwidth or what? Bandwidth, bandwidth, bandwidth. You would stop complaining if just once, you hooked up on a cell phone to the newsgroups. I tried it several times and frankly, it takes too darn long. Text only is bad enough, especially when someone leaves tons of message and only responds with a one liner. Correct, Also news/mail are -NOT<- HTML. Real news/mail programs (Agent, Eudora, Pegisus, Pine, TRN, Soup, Newswatcher, TIN, etc) don’t do HTML, only Netscape (news and mail added on to a Web-broser) and Outlook Express (what do I need to say about this MS product that invites all those worms/viri/etc into your computer) Despite MS and Netscape the vast majority of news and mail programs have little (if any) support for HTML/MIME. The primary reason is, they aren’t needed. Content is much more important then appearance. —– RV and Camping FAQ <http://kendaco.telebyte.net/rlindber/rv/ Of all the things I’ve lost, the thing I miss the most is my sanity

Have been checking this group out and was wondering if any of you folks have ever been on one of the barge cruises.
We took a barge cruise last year as part of a Mardi Gras package through Creative World, and it was without a doubt the best vacation we’ve ever taken. Our motorhomes were loaded on the barges then we docked right near Jax Brewery right in the French Quarter for the last week of Mardi Gras, and we just relaxed and watched the drunks stagger by. The Mardi Gras portion I wouldn’t repeat again (a few too many drunks for our taste, and New Orleans can be a bit much during Mardi Gras.), but the rest of the trip was great. After Mardi Gras we pushed off and went via the intracoastal waterway to Houma, La., then up to Baton Rouge and back to New Orleans. Total barge time was about 2 weeks – 1 week docked during Mardi Gras and one week cruising. Depending on which tour company has chartered the barges, you can usually expect to have side trips via tour buses to various sites along the way. We had several. The best part of the trip however was the ability to just completely relax and enjoy the world passing by. It was truly great, and I have no doubt we’ll do another barge cruise again. In case you’re interested, the barges themselves are owned by a company called RV River Charters. They also own the tow boat that pushes the barges, and they supply the river pilot and deck hands. They DO NOT charter to individuals – Tour operators charter the barge from RV River Charters and package and sell the tours. They also provide wagon masters that accompany the tour while on the barges and during any side trips. RV River Charters requires that all tour participants sign a liability waiver before they are allowed on the barges. This is a pretty serious document that you REALLY should read carefully ahead of time. We weren’t shown it until just before boarding – I would have preferred to have more time to decide if I wanted to waive so many rights, but we signed, and the trip was without incident. When you talk to a tour operator, ask them if they will send one to you so you can study it, if you think this may be of concern to you. There are roughly a half dozen different tour routes that RV River Charters operates, and there are several tour operators that sell these various tours. With a little investigation you’ll discover that a given route will be sold by multiple tour operators, and the prices will vary a fair amount depending on who the tour operator is. (By the way, a tour operator will charter an ENTIRE trip – you won’t find multiple operators selling the same trip on the same day.) My guess is the difference in price could be because of differing numbers of side trips, etc. As I said earlier, our trip was operated by Creative World, and we were extremely pleased with how well it was organized. Yes. One problem is that HTML stuff takes up more space on the server. Binarie groups hurt ‘em big time. Thus, many servers don’t carry binary groups. Try surfing some simple web pages from a cell phone sometime. Bandwidth rears it’s ugly head there also. Mark
