I don’t see it right off since LAWAPD and LAPD patrol the airport and terminals ’round the clock, and have never seen folks sleeping in the terminals harassed if they are in the seated areas. As someone else pointed out, there are no couches or sofas per se, just seats with armrests between each seat which makes "stretching out" or laying flat very impractical.
Well, there are ways of getting around this. If I can’t find a set of seats where I can lay out, there are several things one could do. First, one could find a spot on the floor to sleep on. In Seattle, the seats in the reservation counter area are grouped in 4’s and they all have armrests between them. But, those 4 seats are grouped in the shape of an L, so two on the vertical axis and two on the horizontal. I’ve found that I could lay down on one end and have my body stretched out at an angle to reach the other end of the L. Of course, this might be impractical for someone who’s very tall. Anyway, in the airports I’ve slept in, the custodians clean at night time, so I feel relatively "safe". Of course, I am hugging my luggage and wrapping them around myself etc. I’ve never tried this, but you could potentially sleep behind a gate counter if you wanted to feel more secluded. I’ve also hidden my luggage behind the seat I’m sleeping on (the seat is against a wall) so that makes stealing the luggage a bit harder. Heck, there are many spots to sleep around an airport, regardless of whether the seats have armrests or not. Conal

There will be two of us, arriving at LAX from Vancouver at approx midnight and departing at approx 9am for Hawaii. Should I ; Stay in the airport o/night? Is this possible at LAX? Is this safe at LAX? OR Book a hotel, use their shuttle and get about 5 hours kip at a hotel? Any suggestions? All information gladly accepted and thanked for in advance,
Know that, for God knows what reason, you can’t be served alcohol in a California hotel after 1am — so bring your own if you want a nightcap!

I got a "delayed passenger" $29.50 (or so) card from the airline desk for one of a choice of nearby hotels, took their shuttle, and thought it very good value. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Did the airline delay you? Or was it scheduled to not make it to the next flight? — Weiyun [Remove the obvious for email replies]

He won’t. Priceline doesn’t care a dime where you’re from as long as your card is valid. Dirk.

Well, (embarrassed foot-shuffling) I just happened to be at the counter checking on a flight the next day, when a person in front of me who had mis-connected was given this. Quoth I "How about one for me too?" and explained I was standing by for the morning flight.

That’s a nice move by the airline…

This actually brings up a good question. If I was the person who is doing the overnight at LAX, I would actually sleep at the airport. Of course, then again, most of you probably don’t make as little money as I do, so you don’t have a need to be as stingy as I am
Perfectly understandable. Blowing $200 for 6 hours of bed time is pretty rough! But that said, are there any major airports that do not allow passengers to stay overnight?
I think that many airports are concerned about security risks as well as attracting the homeless. Many times in the past, I’ve had to sleep over at an airport (San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Schipol) either because of a missed connection or because of plane delay. I’ve never had the airport authorities question why I’m sleeping at the airport.
Wasn’t there a report of some guy with political problems back at home, who has lived at CDG for a record period of time? I remember discussing that one on RTA a long time ago. — Weiyun [Remove the obvious for email replies]

There are a tremendous number of hotels around LAX at all price ranges. They are easy to get to and back from. I recommend finding a room.
I agree and suggest they do the same… The airport is pretty safe though as long as you stay awake all night.
Would you care to elaborate further on this observation? I know that you can hang around in LAX as I have picked up colleagues at 3am in the morning there (flight delay). But are you sure you want to do that? Get a room at a cheap rate on Priceline and get some decent rest before your onward flight… The other thing is that those seats in LAX aren’t suitable for a stretch out. Too many arm rests. You’ll have to sleep on the carpet (yuk) if you want to get down to a flat position. As for Priceline. You may have problems if you (aussie I assume) don’t have a US bank credit card. — Weiyun [Remove the obvious for email replies]
