Blowoff bucket sanitizer
Question:
I use a blowoff tube down into a bucket of sanitizer solution. I have at times used a solution of CTSP and currently Iodophor as the liquid in the bucket. Unfortunately the iodophor gives up the ghost before the primary ferment is done. I am slightly worried about having a non-lethal to bacteria/yeast liquid in the bucket. What do other people use and why? thanks, dion — Staff Software Engineer Megatek Corporation, San Diego, California

A weak bleach solution is the standard I believe; it is used by breweries. Just use a large bucket maybe a quarter full of bleach solution and you should have no problems.. And of course make sure you use a large diameter blowoff tube, but you know that already. nimbus

I don’t worry about anything getting back up into my fermenter because the fermentation gases keep a positive pressure in the fermenter. It seems physically impossible for anything to get back into the fermenter as long as the gases keep pushing everything back out. | | Kinney Baughman | | / / | "Beer is my business and I’m late for work" |

i just use about 1/4 cup bleach. as soon as the foam dies down, i’ll attach an airlock. also, the bleach won’t stain the bucket–if that matters. schmek
