Indiana brewing

Question:

This is posted for a friend; he is moving to Indiana (he got a tenured position at Purdue) and while I am happy for him, I am sad that I’m losing yet another drinking buddy. In any event, he would like any information regarding micro-breweries or brewing suppliers in the central Indiana area. Post reply to the board, reply to me directly, or he can be reached at Thank you. I live in Indianapolis, but I used to live in West Lafayette. The only supplier that I know of in WL is "Goodness Grocery"…a quintessential Hoosier name if there ever was one! They don’t have a very big selection. If you’re really in a bind for some Cascade… There’s a store here in Indy, Wine Art, with a slightly better selection. Nothing to jump up and down about, though. The only micro I know of is in Indy: The Broad Ripple Brew Pub. It’s a pretty nice place with some good brews. Even won an award their first year out. I’ll E-mail you the addresses if you want…once I find them all! <g — Ken Board GEnie: k.board

Tell your friend to go by Goodness Grocery and look up Paul Kelly.  He’s the assistant manager and runs the brewing section.  He’s also a very close friend of mine and a darn good brewer.  We’ve not only brewed quite a few together, but sampled many as well.  He got me into it, and is quite a nice fellow. There was an article in the local paper up there a couple of months back. It included some good info on the local brewing scene. I do remember that there is supposed to be another brew shop in the area, but I don’t recall the name.  I’ll try to look it up tonight and Email it to you. hh

Depending on how long ago you lived there, you might find that the homebrew section has expanded.  Paul claims that it WAS very small when he took over (2 years ago?) but has expanded since.  I do believe that it is still probably relatively small, but you’ll find a bit more than cascade . . :=) hh — Harry Haas  GTRI/RIDL/EB    |    Georgia Tech Research Institute Research Engineer II        |    Georgia Institute of Technology 404-528-7679                |    Atlanta Georgia, 30332

I had a chance to sample Broad Ripple’s wares at the Boston Brewer’s Festival back in May.  The ESB was terrific.  The brewer had a thick northern England accent.  High gravity, bitter brewing must be in his blood.

Congratulations to your friend!!!  As I reside in Indy, and attend Purdue, I hope I can shed some light on this great event.  In Indianapolis, there is one GREAT brewpub (The Broadripple Brewpub) that is the only way you can get their products.  I have heard rumors of two supply shops in W. Laffyette, and I will check when I get up this fall.  In Indy, there is a good shop, a bit expensive, called Wine-Art, that is about 1 1/2 hours from campus. I hope I have helped.
