I agree. I was just initially outraged at seeing the comment. —my personal issues with bars gigs, which I dislike for many reasons. I have "career envy" of a guy like Tony Levin, and I aspire to that level in my future, if I excel in my craft, and play my cards right –integrity, skill, connections

Response:

And I’ll probably send Sam an e-mail for some input.

let me know. i’m looking to start (well continue..it’s been on hold for this year) my own design company as i’ve been doing digital media etc. for years now. happy to give you input if you like

Response:

Your right, i over reacted and didn’t think before i posted. I’m sorry Sam. I was harsh and rude.

That’s alright. i may have been as well. You see, we do get our share of spam, it’s quite unlikely that the ad was for a member of the newsgroup (alt.guitar.bass – though it was crossposted) so really that means generally there is no-one at the other end. was just making my initial comments known. hope to see you around Timmer. Sam

I was playing a 5 string Godin, amber burst with a curly maple top. I also ended up playing a gig in town that weekend at some brew pub next to (I think)the bar called Palace. Nice to see ya sticking around. You’re a stand up guy for the apology to Sam. He’ll be glad to give you some input on your site. Don’t forget to check out this groups web page www.altguitarbass.com Sam did some work there as well. Jay S

We probably did meet there. I was there with the Aaron Black band that year. And the talkin shop part rings a bell as does David Gogo. What kind of bass were you playing? That will probably jog my memory really well. I guess I’m glad Sam posted that comment on the web page now. I just wish someone would have said something sooner. I’ll redo the graphics and titles and see what i can come up with. And I’ll probably send Sam an e-mail for some input. Nice to meet ya again Jay, Timmer — Bass World http://www.timmerblakely.com Jim Mesi Band http://www.jimmesi.com Hey Timmer…. But, you didn’t ask for a website critique so I’ll shut the hell up. I checked out some of your photos. I have this uncanny feeling that we’ve bumped into each other before. 2 possible places from the photos on your site are: The Yale in Vancouver BC or the Winthrop blues festival. (I was there in 2002) At both places, I would have been playing with David Gogo. You kinda look like a guy that asked me about my bass, and we talked shop for awhile.
hee! after almost 5 months without any alcohol at all, i’ve discovered that the hollow leg hasn’t filled out any — unfortunately, the hollow head is a little bit fuzzy today! =:o we were boring, and had cheeze-dogs and chips to go with the 6-pack of ‘guinness draught’ — the bottles with the weird little nitrous canisters shaking around at the bottom — and the 6-pack of regular guinness. YUMMY — Ok, i’m easily pleased sometimes. :-> we watched the X-games on teevee. i remember watching them in person when they were held in san diego, but it was fun to see them in l.a. too. then we watched juan manuel marquez box a last-minute replacement for smoke gainer, who claimed to have pulled a pectoral muscle during training and backed out. i was smart enough to stay offline, but did drag out a lot of weird CDs at one point or another. i did NOT listen to ‘danny boy,’ which means i wasn’t really anywhere near drunk — tipsiness is way fun though! :-> today i’m doing laundry — life goes on, but the little breaks sure are most keen. :-> rose, not hung over, just s-l-o-w!

I first mis-read it as a ’slalom party,’ and was gonna ask if you were doing the x-treme sports thing along with the x-treme fishing. ;-> i got semi-plastered on 12 guinnesses and a couplea cheeze dogs and watched, first the X-games, and then juan manuel marquez’ boxing [non] match against licona. i even thought of you while watching the x-games, bob, LOL. remember seeing them in person when they were held in san diego, and miss them! you know tony hawk, don’t you? i have a really NICE tony hawk story. a family we know has a little boy with a rare and serious medical condition related to hemophilia but different. rather than bleeding way too much, he just bleeds way too OFTEN. :{ everything cuts the poor little dude. we saw him fall on the grass, and a huge gash opened up in his leg — he bumped his elbow against a plastic kiddie slide and the same thing happened — he’s constantly covered with bandages — but he’s one of the coolest kids you’d ever hope to meet! the mom and dad both used to work with dennis — dad took 3rd shift and mom 1st shift, because someone always needed to be home for their son. he wanted SO bad to be like other kids — i remember how jazzed he was when he got a bike with training wheels — the training wheels never came off, but he was a lot more ‘like other kids’ and it made him SO happy. he really wanted to skateboard, but after a few falls and trips to the hospital, that one was out. the local paper did a story on the lttle boy, and he said that tony hawk was his hero, that he wished he could skate, but as long as he could watch tony, he was still happy. tony hawk, who had never met the family, read the article in the paper…and totally unexpectedly, several days later, a truck pulled up outside their house, with a brand-new playstation, skate video games, and a personal letter and autographed board…all provided by tony hawk his own legendary self. made that little boy’s day/week/YEAR! :-> the family has since moved to PA to be closer to the shriner’s childrens hospital, but i’m telling you, tony hawk isn’t just a skate-god, he’s a guy with heart, and he’s aces in my book. :-> rose

My hollow leg went on a walkabout back when I was 38… and it hasn’t been seen since. A six-pack is easily enough to bring me to my knees anymore. 4’s my limit if I intend to remain even remotely vertical. I drank most of a bottle of brandy for my 40th birthday, and I awoke at 4am lying on my back in the mud – in the rain – about 40 yards from the house where I’d been partying. I know I walked most of the 6 miles home and cycled the rest, but I’ll be damned if I know how I did that. > we were boring, and had cheeze-dogs and chips to go with the 6-pack of > ‘guinness draught’ — the bottles with the weird little nitrous > canisters shaking around at the bottom — and the 6-pack of regular > guinness.
We get Guinness Draight in cans with those "widgets" in them. It’s not bad beer, but the drawback to the format is that you *must* pour them out literally within seconds of openning them, or they swiftly begin to taste like the can. The upside is that Guinness looks especially nice in a pub glass. :-) > rose, not hung over, just s-l-o-w!

I’m slow myself, and I only managed to down 3 of those cans of beer… less than a litre and a half. My dad used to own a brew pub, and produced 7500 litres of 6 different – very fine – beers in the short time they were brewing… I’m glad my days of diminished capacity didn’t begin that early. :-) ((U)) M

They both evaporate at much higher temps than alcohol does… I think the process would then involve distilling the alcohol, then evaporating off all the other lower-temp distillates, then extracting the THC and CBD for re-pickling in the juice. A little like making bud oil, but with an extra twist. :-) ((U)) M

i missed the ending of the 1/2 pipe finals, Bucky Lasek was in first place when i turned channel,, ironically i know many of those guys,, i met buckey when he toured with toney hawk, for Powell/Peralta ,at the time he was only 14 years old, and was toney’s new protege`, he was awesome on the pipe in rishmond,, and broke one of his boards,, i have it on my wall in my room!!! with other sk8 stuff, with toney hawk and others. any time toney came to vancouver i wouldmeet him and the team cause in vancouver our local boy kevin harris was a world pro champion in freestyle, and held the guiness world record for 2 foot tail wheelies of over 1100 took 15 minutes of spinning. i have some pics with me and toney and lots of memories, from tournaments thru the 70’s and 80’s. and was lucky to meet a huge list of pro riders who came to vancouver cause we dont sue everyone for anything,, causing most califonia sk8parks to close from lawsuits, here you cannot sue in a public park if you break your arm cause you are stupid,, !! we have over 40 outdoor parks in BC all free for kids to use!!! also in the summer all the pro snowboarders come to blackcomb glacier to practice,, huge giant wind lip jumps,,100 feet of air!! ,i met all the pros in the 80’s when snowboarding started!!! i was too old to compete against 16 year old teenagers!!,, but did compete in the over 30 – masters group in the 90’s i have some videos of snowboarding where i can be seen in them,, not riding partying only!!,, but my brother and i were in some photo shoots, and other events,, sponsored by Kemper snowboards, on grouse we took up 200 underpriveledged kids from bad neighborhoods,, to tech them to snowboard, for a day,, we supplied all the boots boards etc,, and spent the day teaching teens from 13-16 to ride, most cannot afford the lift ticket let alone the 1000 dollars to outfit your kid with snowboard gearthese days. me and my bro took all the girls right away!!! they actually learned very fast, but the boys who sk8borded jumped right on the snowboards,, back in the day,, we took alot of crap from old school skiiers,, wondering what the hell we were riding coffee tables down the mountain for??? , but i knew it would catch on,, now in the olympics!!! 20 years later. bobD ramblin on today,, ps we still meet once a year for old boys day in vancouver, with the old gang,, usually around the local – slam city jam – festival weekend, xgames rock concert thing on the bill this summer was rancid and offspring, and bad religion.

Earlier this week, the City Council scrapped a proposed ban on smoking in restaurants after the council president, a smoker, said a public hearing would be a waste of time. And the incoming mayor? He is a brew pub owner who favors an unlikely "regional" ban. Banning smoking is always a tough sell, but in a state where just 15 percent of adults are obese

We are staying at the Adams Mark. I remember having an AS3 user meet of about 6 or 7 of us on that last trip. They picked me up and we went to a Brewery with a restaurant attached. I guess about 10 minutes or less drive from the hotel. Anyway does any current AS3′r happen to know the place I am talking about.

I think you are talking about the Breckenridge Brew pub. It is at 2220 Blake Street (very close to Coors Field). That one has been around the longest. — mc I haven’t lost my mind, It is backed up on disk somewhere. QOF

::: Well, there will always be things that you really like. You have to decide that right now you need to put that aside for a while and concentrate on your weight loss (assuming that is your goal). Sooner or later you will be able to have that favorite thing again. And even while you are LCing, you can — every once in a while. However, Jan 1 is just two week ago, so it hasn’t really been that long. But still, you have friends coming, you will be on the road — if all you do is have a couple of those beers, it would a bad thing. Just get right back on induction when you get back and plan to go LC for a good bit to time so you can get it down. It really does take some practice.

"It woudl be a bad thing". I’m not so sure that having a few beers would be a bad thing. I think what would be a ‘bad thing’ would be not going back to LC after having these beer. I plan on living a long time and learning self-discipline is one of the toughest things for me. However, I think that if I tell myself, "You cannot have a beer on a special occassion" will cause me to crave it even more on other days which will lead to a binge. Now, I’m not talking about having a beer every business lunch or even having a beer every other night, but I’m referring to the every once and a while occassions. BTW, I’m going to have a couple of beers tomorrow night also since my best friend is showing up for a few hours. I plan on taking the calories and carbs into my daily allowance and realize that I probably won’t lose any weight and might even gain a pound or two. Guess what, on Sunday I’m going to drink water like a demon and get on my darn exercise bike for 1 hour. Realize whatever you do is a choice. I choose to loose weight and will do whatever it takes to get to my number. The only person that can make me fail is myself — and trust me, that ain’t going to happen.
hmm if it helps any, my husband had success with LC when he was on it before and he continued to drink Miller Lite, I believe it has fewer carbs than most beers. And now there is that new Michelob Ultra with only 2. something carbs in it. But he was lucky, the alcohol didn’t stall him and he just counted the carbs. Now whether of not you’d classify these as "good" beers is another question

In November my husband and I went away for a 3 day weekend to celebrate our anniversary. I found eating lowcarb is easy outside the home. I planned on staying on it throughout our trip. I had one planned cheat which was a piece of cheesecake and some wine, otherwise, steaks, salads, seafood omelets, lobster, oh my god the food was wonderful and all lowcarb except for that cheesecake! I did not miss the carby stuff one bit! JMHO — Pat 265-230-140ish Started LowCarb 9-9-02

Do you really have to go off plan? If you ask me, this is a good time to learn how to do LC on the road! I don’t mean to sound like I’m beating up on you, though. You need to do what you think is best for you.

Roger, and everyone else who answered, you did make me think. Yes, I think I can go without potatoes or fries or sweets. But I really really like good beer. And I really miss it. I haven’t had one since January 1, and I honestly think that’s the longest I’ve gone without a beer since I started college. So I was going to allow myself to have a couple this weekend. Plus there’s a brew pub within walking distance of where we’re going, and that’s going to be hard to pass up. I know the difference between a craving and just wanting something because I like the taste. It’s been easier to give up beer than wheat thins. In fact, at the end of induction I’m no happier at the thought of no wheat thins than I was at the start – I didn’t outgrow the desire for them. But how do I deal with giving up something I really liked the taste of, or choosing to have some and then trying to control the damage? Man, I’m admiring all of you more every day! Does it get easier? Or, if I’m still having such angst after two weeks am I not cut out for this? dutchie

Speaking as a health care professional (pharmacist) your liver is used to "detoxify" your blood stream. Acetaminophen is cleared by a type of reaction that only has so much capacity in your liver – and drinking can deplete the capacity of detoxificationin in your liver. Taking the two at the same time means that there is more acetaminophen left in the body and it is actually toxic if not cleared properly. For the most part any drug (and as I sip on my beer, yes alcohol IS a drug) that needs to be cleared by the liver – and can take up a large amount of the liver’s capacity to clear it – should not be taken at the same time as acetaminophen. Just reduces the risk for a liver transplant.
Dan, that is my trick as well, and it works great. Four Ibes with water, before bed. Maybe a little hazy the next day, but no headache. The irony is that when you most need to take it is when you’re most likely to forget. Incidently, after a root canal, my dentist said to take four Ibes at a time, up to four times a day. That’s 3200 mg!
Creeps up on you, doesn’t it? Remember when it used to piss you off when friends would come over and drink all your beer? Now that you’re making it, you INVITE them to do it! Go figure…

Denny, Well done! An inspiration to us brewing young-uns. I’m going to be doing batch #13 this Friday and am solving the rate-of-brewing dilemma of doing my first 10 gal. batch! I also solved the "where did all the beer go" by dusting off my flint shotgun my grand-pappy gave me. Filled it full of rock salt to keep away those pesky neighbors.
With a corny keg and CO2, you can control this entirely from flat to Old Faithful. Some would say you can with priming sugar too, but I’d argue that measuring by volume isn’t going to be as repeatable. There are other variables as well. It’s very easy with force carbonation: set the pressure according to the temperature and the desired volumes of CO2. You can still bottle as much as you want.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I opened up a bottle of Nut Brown Ale I brewed this summer. The taste was great, the same as it was since it was first carbonated. The only difference is that it had that carbonation "bite" to it. That tingle on the tonge that I get from the local brew pub. How can I get this in all my beers? I like to brew wheat beers, where it says not to age them, drink after carbonation. I am normally a all bottle kind of guy. I have recently picked up a few corny kegs, party pigs and mini-kegs. Should I prime with more sugar? I use 2/3 ~ 3/4 cup per 5gal. Can I increase this with the expectation to drink the beer quickly? Will the corny keg and CO2 provide this quickly? any suggestions?

Response:

I have to second that – definitely hit Brouwerij ‘t Ij. Pretty easy to spot as it’s in an old windmill. Those beers are amazing. Excellent tour as well. When I was there (2001) Tone was the guy to see. Nice guy. He also ran the Bier Koenig (sp?) a few blocks away. They had a pretty good selection of beers from around the world (emphasis on Europe). He’s also keen on trading, so bring some of your favorites. Maximillian’s was about 2 blocks, umm, north I think, of ‘t Ij. Pretty standard brass, wood, hop vine laden brewpub, but good beer as well. Pick up the Beer Drinkers Guide to Amsterdam. Only about $6 and really helps with good reviews of breweries, brewpubs, and pubs with good beer selections. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Brewpubs in Brussels/Amsterdam or in Bruge,Ghent?
Never mind about brewpubs, the beer-lover’s Mecca in Amsterdam is "In de Wildeman". It’s an absolute gem in the middle of Amsterdam, a short walk from Centraal Station, but it’s an oasis apart from the British lager louts and red-light-district tourists.
At the risk of sounding dense, why weren’t they allowed to sell things? I thought that’s how junk yards work – collect other people’s crap (saving the rest of us the trouble of looking) and then sell it to the people that want it. Here in Canberra, they started a job-creation project called "Revolve", where long-term unemployed people were paid to collect saleable stuff off the tip-face, organise it and sell it. It’s been so successful, it now employs dozens of people and is a coupla-million dollar operation. Cheers Richard F. This was the type of junk yard that recycles metals. They deal only with that. Apparently the guy didn’t want to deal with any other issues that day. I had an opportunity to just load and go but I had just made it known I was interested in that item and didn’t want to have them "release the hounds". Steve

: ANyone brew anything today? Not today, but I smacked an old Wyeast 1084 the other day. Gonna take some time off work next week and make an oatmeal stout. All this talk about stout around here has been making me thirsty. Oh, and I bottled roughly 50 litres of beer last night. Had some delightful help, too: Here’s something for you single guys to try. This year for my workplace’s United Way drive I offered a hands on all grain brewing lesson + 23 litres of beer as a silent auction item. The winner got to choose the beer style and I supplied all ingredients, bottles, etc. Anyway, much to my amazement a couple of cute girls from Quebec doing a work term here outbid everyone – they wanted a Blanch de Chambly clone, so we more or less followed the recipe from Clonebrews. I kept telling my wife I was doing this for a good cause But seriously, it was great fun for everyone.
It’s not an ignorant stereotype, friend. I used to work as a trash truck driver and have made many, many trips to several different landfills. ALL the pickers I have seen were obviously not from ’round hyar’bouts, if you catch my drift. And, believe me, I saw a LOT of pickers. Doesn’t mean that I’m denigrating anyone, just making a statement derived from personally observed data points. Here in America, we truly DO have a land of plenty…. plenty of ignorant folks who throw plenty of perfectly reuseable items in the trash because they are too lazy to take a load to the Goodwill or any of several dozen other organizations which could truly benefit from castoffs. We as a society have gotten so used to having way more stuff than we need that we even throw away perfectly good white boys…. ahem,…. okay, that was an obscure reference to a really funny movie, but I think my point is genuine. Junk Yards owners on the other hand will sell you there mother for a price… no offence intended to reputable owners but my ex-brother-in-law owns a junk yard…don’t ask.. — Bill Bufkin Homebrewing site http://home.swbell.net/bufkin What a bummer, I went to the junk yard yesterday and as I was exiting my vehical I spyed this nice shiny 40-50 lb aluminum cylinder with that familiar Co2 type valve on top. I thought man "come to papa". Being the honest sort I inquiered within. Of course they proceeded to give me the "No, we don’t sell things here and insurance prohibits us from giving it to you" Ugh! I was bummed! It looked fine. Not a dent or scatch. But I had to let it go.
Talk to the owner alone, bring cash. I’ve had the same thing happen to me. Sometimes the owner will look at the money, then look the other way. It’s money in his pocket that he doesn’t have to pay taxes on…

Many, many times, cash talks and …. I recently went to a brew pub and was told the sampler was only 5 beers. They had six on tap. I told them to give me all six beers on the sampler. The waiter explained that it only came with 5. I replied that since they have six beers, I wanted all six and that when he brings the standard 5 to add a single with it. He understood what I meant which was "If you desire any tip, my sampler will contain 6 beers"…;) Cheers, Mike
