Brew rate increase
Question:
February 2003 will mark the 5th anniversary of my start in homebrewing. Last Oct., 2001, I brewed my 100th batch..that’s 100 batches in just under 4 years. This coming Sun, I will brew batch #148…that’s 48 batches in just over a year! This is getting scary…pretty soon, I’ll have to brew continously just to keep up the rate of growth! Even scarier is that you’d think that with that rate of brewing, I’d have lots of beer sitting around..BUT NOOOO! Where did it all go? Why has my stomach gotten so large??? ;)
Brewing in a group makes for more brewing, especially when none of the members exercises anything like restraint. So tomorrow’s batch is going to be #139 for us since March 2001. Excess beer is not a problem. There sure are a lot more people coming by to visit these days … ben

100 gallons a year for you. Another 100 gallons for a wife. If you convert to a polygamous religion, will the revenuers give allow you 100 gallons per wife over the age of 21? It could be part of the dowry. I’ll give you three sheep, a cask of olives, and 100 gallons of beer PER year for the term of your marriage. Hmmm, a spiritual question… Carter

How much beer does it take to blow a liver. He estimated that it would take almost a case a day for about 14 years. That is brewing every other day and doing it in an impaired state. Sounds like work to me. The answer to the real important question above is 800 mg Iboprophen and a lot of water. Never Tylenol.

Speaking as a health care professional (pharmacist) your liver is used to "detoxify" your blood stream. Acetaminophen is cleared by a type of reaction that only has so much capacity in your liver – and drinking can deplete the capacity of detoxificationin in your liver. Taking the two at the same time means that there is more acetaminophen left in the body and it is actually toxic if not cleared properly. For the most part any drug (and as I sip on my beer, yes alcohol IS a drug) that needs to be cleared by the liver – and can take up a large amount of the liver’s capacity to clear it – should not be taken at the same time as acetaminophen. Just reduces the risk for a liver transplant. Response:
The medical profession recommends ibuprophen after alcohol consumption because it is removed from the bloodstream by the kidneys as opposed to acetamenaphen (active ingredient in Tylenol) which is removed via the liver. Studies indicate that it is bad longterm to overtax your liver with both – it can accelerate liver damage.

Dan, that is my trick as well, and it works great. Four Ibes with water, before bed. Maybe a little hazy the next day, but no headache. The irony is that when you most need to take it is when you’re most likely to forget. Incidently, after a root canal, my dentist said to take four Ibes at a time, up to four times a day. That’s 3200 mg! I said wow, that’s WAY more than the box allows, and he said not a problem. Ken A.

Creeps up on you, doesn’t it? (the brew rate, not the belly) I just ran the figures a couple of weeks ago for 2002. I’m at 185 gallons for the year, but like you, I have none around the house (well, there’s 15 gallons on deck, but that’s it). I pretty much brew on demand, keeping a rotating stock on hand. Funny thing is, I really don’t drink that much. I have maybe one or two beers a day, and my wife has one about every other day. The thing is, though, when you have a brew pub in your house, every football game is at your place (and the way the Eagles have been playing — it’s going to be a long season!). And if you add hockey to that mix, and it’s no wonder where the beer goes. Remember when it used to piss you off when friends would come over and drink all your beer? Now that you’re making it, you INVITE them to do it! Go figure…

Reminds me of the little boy who came home from school and told his dad his science teacher was teaching about health. She held up two beakers, one with alcohol and one with water. In the water was a healthy worm swimming around. It the booze was a dead worm. When she asked the class what they could deduce from this, the little boy sprung up and happily reported, "If ya drink, ya won’t have worms!" Denny, Well done! An inspiration to us brewing young-uns. I’m going to be doing batch #13 this Friday and am solving the rate-of-brewing dilemma of doing my first 10 gal. batch! I also solved the "where did all the beer go" by dusting off my flint shotgun my grand-pappy gave me. Filled it full of rock salt to keep away those pesky neighbors. Damn neighbors drank a case of my IPA on Saturday, then sneaked in a couple bottles of my Stout, THEN some of the Belgians! Doh, not the Belgians! They’re too young! The worst part is that they snuck some outta the Ranchero (no wonder the dogs were barking), and didn’t wash the bottles out when they returned…. only some of them! "Mine, mine!"
