about one day in Scottland
Question:
I will have about one day to spend in Scottland i will be arriving at 1215 on a saturday and leveing erly afternoon sunday, what do I HAVE TO SEE IN EDINBOROUGH in one day thanks
The centre of Edinborough is reasonably compact and can be done in a day. Take a walk up the Royal Mile to Edinborough Castle. Rent a CD audio unit and proceed at your own pace, as briskly or as casually as you wish. Close the day back down the hill at one of the pubs on Rose Street. Have a good trip. I agree that the Castle is absolutely a must-see – the audio guide is well worth hiring. If its a nice day, you might also consider the Camera Obscura just near the entrance to the Castle – great views over the roof tops with an entertaining "guided tour" as you watch. As a contrast to the armoured fortress of the castle, an excellent glimpse of Georgian life can be found in the New Town – the North side of Princes Street. There is "The Georgian House" in Charlotte Square, which has been restored to show what Edinburgh life in the early 19th century was like. If you want a tour of Edinburgh with a commentary, there are open-top buses which show the main sights – you can get on one of these at Waverley Bridge (there are a couple of different companies) near the entrance to the main railway station, at the end of Princes Street Gardens. If you’re coming at the end of August, you will be in time for the Edinburgh Festival – it has its own web site at http://www.eif.co.uk/index.html – lots of theatre, concerts and the Military Tattoo http://www.edintattoo.co.uk/ to choose from. I went to the Tattoo last year – it was wonderful – a good traditional Scottish night! I hope you have a great 24 hours in Edinburgh! We had one day to see Edinburgh. We got off the bus at Princes Street. Shopped our way to the castle. Toured the castle. Shopped our way to St. Giles Kirk. Toured that (saw the Scottish Parliment Visitor’s center on the way). Took a bus to the botanic gardens. Took a bus back to the royal mile. Shopped back to Princes Street. Had tea. Shopped our way to the Hard Rock Cafe. Ate. Stopped at a brew-pub on the way to the bus stop. We really enjoyed just wandering around the city – it was suprizingly compact. todd – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I will have about one day to spend in Scottland i will be arriving at 1215 on a saturday and leveing erly afternoon sunday, what do I HAVE TO SEE IN EDINBOROUGH in one day thanks

The tourist baord has an information centre and shop right near the station. Just come out of the station and head towards Princes Street. They have lots of elaflets on attractions. You could visit the castle, which has good views, and perhaps try the Whiskey Museum, which is very close to the castle.

I don’t know that you will have all that much time but I would suggest, weather permitting, that you walk along Princes Street, through the old town up to the Castle and take a tour through it. By the way, to prevent dissension, the town is Edinburgh. I don’t think the Scots ever use the Southern spelling "borough". Jim.
