The New Yankee Workshop
Question:
It is my understanding that Norm Abram built The New Yankee Workshop behind his house and that the show of the same name is filmed there. He is probably the only TV personality that built his own studio.
Has anyone here ever visited The New Yankee Workshop? In what town does Norm Abram live? —
Close. The NYW is located behind the home of Russel Morash, the producer and creator of many of the do it your self shows done by WGBH in Boston, including NYW, This Old House and The Victory Garden. The Victory Garden is also located behind his house. Fine Woodworking had an article last year about Norm and the NYW. A sidebar of the article discribes the planning process that Norm is going through for his own workshop, behind his own home.

: For those of you who watch Norm, could someone tell me what he puts on his : workbench when doing glue-ups ? Brown wrapping paper. I use a roll of meat wrapping paper I got from the local Costco/Price Club wholesale store. It serves a large paper for patterns too. I also wax my benchtop several times a year. Glue normally doesn’t stick. Except super glue, which will eat right through the wax. I really screwed up a spot on the bench, when I laid a 4/4 piece of maple in a puddle of super glue. (Hey the stuff’s clear and I don’t see so good anymore!) When I wrenched the board free, a nice piece of maple butcher block bench came with it. I had to inlay a small piece to affect a repair. — Steve Jaynes, Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., Beaverton, OR. "What I write is my own mistake. Don’t blame my employer!" (Facsimile of a disclaimer)

The shop where they film is not at Norms house altho Norm did build a shop vary much like it at his house in Vermont. The shop was originally at Russ Morash’s house, the exec. producer of the show. It has since moved to a new location. Kevin
Response:
I think the house and shop belong to the director or producer of the show.

I have been told that the "The New Yankee Workshop" is located behind the show’s producers’ house and "belongs" to him/her. Order 100 bf or so of hard maple and birch. Tell the supplier that you need it surfaced two sides. Somehow get him to forget that you told him. Wait ages for the wood to arrive by truck freight. Accept the shipment when it comes. Get out your flea-market #6 Bailey. Tune it up. Sharpen the blades. Start planing. Mark., I think I need a longer plane — is there such a thing as a #7?

Yep. Bench planes come in size numbers for as many digits you have in total, usually eight unless your pet saber toothed cat bit one off. Why Stanely even makes plane sizes for those who have gotten a finger in the way of a power planer (i.e., their 5 1/2 and 5 1/4 for the real reckless.)

There was an article in some magazine a few years ago (Fine Woodworking maybe?) about Norm Abrams and The New Yankee Workshop. Norm was a contractor that Russ Morash (TOH and NYW producer) hired to build a workshop in his backyard. About the same time he was developing a new show called This Old House and needed a carpenter/contractor on the show. The rest is history. — Hugh Lagle, Alcatel Network Systems, Raleigh, NC USA *** Individualists Unite ***

See FWW number 99. There is a good article about Norm and the show. FYI, the Workshop is built behind his producers house and not his. If I remember correctly, the garden next to the shop is used for another PBS show. – John Pack P.S. Has anyone here ever : visited The New Yankee Workshop? In what town does Norm Abram live? I don’t know whose house it is, but friends of ours who watch Victory Garden have seen the shop in the back of the garden in several shows. It may be an area of a couple homes which WGBH has purchased for the shows. If all else fails, you could call WGBH in Boston and check with them. Jim McCorison

There is some info on this in the FWW that has Norm on the Cover. As I remember Norm did build it, though not on his land but on the property of WBH or whatever entity produces the show. This article also included photos of Norm’s in-progress new home *and* detached workshop (a sketch was printed as well). This has been probably 2 years ago by now.

Has anyone here ever : visited The New Yankee Workshop? In what town does Norm Abram live? Actually, The New Yankee Workshop is in Russell Morash’s yard. He’s the producer of NYWS and also the producer of The Victory Garden, which is also in his yard… I’ve never visited the NYWS. Don’t know where Norm lives. He was featured in Fine Woodworking a while back. Check it out for details on the relation- ship between Morash and Abram, how the show is filmed, all about Norm’s own shop he’s building, and other trivia. By the way, I have visited the "No Yankee Workshop". In fact, I built it! There’s a signmaker near here who knows the guy who made Norm’s sign. My wife had him make me a similar sign for my birthday/shop-christening party. I’m taking some photos of the sign to post on my home page (give me another month). In the meantime, I have pointers to other woodworking (and beer making and NASCAR and chile pepper) sources on my home page. http://www.valdosta.peachnet.edu/~pworth Check it out! –Paul Worth–

A dead plastic shower curtain would work fine, too. Unless you’re gluing up with Testor’s model airplane cement…

Thanks for the quick response. However to provide a little more info, Norm appears to protect his bench with a sheet of material that appears grey on my T.V. and looks to be about 3/4 inches thick. I seem to remember a segment on This Old House which Norm co-hosted where they were protecting the hardwood floor of an apartment building with what looked like the same material. I’ve been trying to find out about this for about a year now and I think it’s becoming an obsession. Maybe if someone would post his address I could write and ask him.

I believe is just "builders" or rosin paper. I’ve used it before putting it down between the sub floor and hardwood flooring. At least that’s what it looks like to me.

I believe the material they have used on floors is what is often used for and referred to as "sound board". It is 1/2" thick and made of what seems to be compressed cellulose. We have it on our shop benches. It holds up well but glue does stick to it and become hard blobs if you’re a bit on the sloppy side. td

I will make a giant assumption and assume that you are concerned about protecting his work bench top. It’s more than likely a sheet of melamine, or plactic laminate. Glue dosn’t stick to the surface so after the glue dries you can easily scrape it off. Or if you want you can wash it off before it dries. If you want an alternative try paper. A 60" wide roll of 60lbs kraft paper that’s 800 or so feet long is approx. $40.00. 60lbs paper is really heavy weight paper and will stand up to mild abuse. When your done with the glue up just toss it out.(errr ummmm recycle it) Later, Dean Brower

The gray stuff is called Homosote. Looks like it’s made from reconstituted newsprint, but it’s heavier than you’d think to look at it. It’s also very handy for bulletin boards, mounting/stretching cloth (like needlepoint) pictures, etc. It’s also pretty cheap. Used to be widely available at lumber yards, but I admit I haven’t seen it lately. Russell Kay, Technical Editor, BYTE Magazine

Mike, Not only wax paper, but how about: poly’d plywood, melamine (sp?), aluminum foil, a sheet of aluminum, and sheet metal used for duct work. I personally favor melamine since that is what my table has on top and so it requires no covering. Poly on particle board comes in a distant second. Alan

I don’t know about Norm, Mike or Allen, but I just use the bench. Mine’s finished with tung with some poly thrown in. No problemo. Vince

http://www.infoseek.com and type in New Yankee Workshop. You will find a ton of stuff about Norm and his TV show. Your search will also lead to the TV station that produces the show. That will lead you to other shows including This Old House. Doing the search myself, I found a web site for Yankee Workshop but I don’t think it is the official site.
